I don't see Lind having untapped potential nor do I see him being a "safe" bet either. Lind's plate discipline improved last year, but aside from one year where he kept swinging outside of the zone, he's regarded mainly for his above-average plate discipline. He hadn't driven the ball that well in '08 while he quite a jump in ISO. So, what I'm saying is Lind can either come close to repeating last year (or better yet to duplicate '09) or take a step back and go to what the most reasonable projection was for him going into '09 (somewhere in the ballpark of 25 HR, 90 RBI).
That said, Lind is safer than Upton in terms of what he can provide in power and plate discipline. However, it's hard to write off Upton completely when he should be healthy on a shoulder that shouldn't nag him as much. If his plate discipline is up to scratch, he should put the ball in play better, instead of just living and dying by the flyball. Upton might be a bargain compared to Lind, if most have indeed soured on him enough for him to fall a bit in drafts. So, I still see Upton having better upside while Lind is "safer", but not quite as safe as some claim him to be.
