Who to keep....WHIR

Postby misterf » Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:45 pm

10-team, 5x5 roto league. We keep 10 players per season...no restrictions. Keepers due by Christmas.

I have 8 players on my no-brainer list:

2b - Brandon Phillips
3b - A-Rod
ss - Troy Tulowitzki
of - Carl Crawford
of - Justin Upton
of - Curtis Granderson - (wasn't a "no-brainer" for me until traded to Yankees)
sp - Tim Lincicum
sp - Zack Greinke

Now I need help picking the final 2 keepers. Here is my list of options:

sp - Yovani Gallardo - (Young kid...lot's k's...will hitter figure him out in 2010?)
1b - Kendry Morales - (young...lots of upside...sophmore slump candidate?)
1b - LAnce Berkman - (Known commodidty...good but not great...age and injuries an issue?)
1b - Carlos Pena - (awsome power....infuriating average)

of - Alfonso Soriano - (age and injuries a problem)
of - Hunter Pence - (not quite living up to expectations)
c- Jorge Posada - (top 5 cather....but is a top 5 catcher worth keeping?)
rp - Heath Bell - (top 10 closer...but is a top 10 closer worth keeping?)
rp - Jose Valverde - (See Heath Bell)

I'm leaning towards picking one of the 1st basemen and also keeping Gallardo. This would fill all fielding postions for me except C and Util, and it would give me 3 pitchers with 200+ k's (but I am a little leary of keeping that many sp's). I think I have too many better options to consider Bell and Valverde, but I am including them as options just in case you disagree.

Who do you think my last two keepers should be? Of course, if you disagree with any of my "no-brainers," let me know.

Thanks in advance....WHIR for sure (but probably not 'til tonight).

MrF

P.S. I will have the 10th pick in the draft...so I can't really count an anybody falling to me on fraft day.

I'm not too big on Berkman, and he might produce but he's definitely on the downswing. I never liked Pena, he'll likely give you some pop, but the hurt he'll put on your average is too much for my taste. Posada's a no, I don't know how much he'll be playing, I don't think he'll even reach 120 games behind the plate, and I'm not sure that he is (or maybe "will be" is the better term) a top-5 catcher. I don't even like drafting closers, you're really only drafting them for help in one category, so the idea of keeping them is something I just wouldn't do. Soriano's value has plummeted, and even if he stays healthy and plays a full season, I don't know if he's better than your other options.

So that leaves us with Pence, Gallardo and Morales. Morales looks to be a better hitter than Pence, and since you're already looking at keeping 3 outfielders, and Gallardo could give you 200 k's, I'd go with Morales and Gallardo.

Mind taking a look at mine? viewtopic.php?f=26&t=398214

Gallardo and Kendry are the absolute picks of that crop.

But I'd question why Brandon Phillips is an automatic.

Thanks for the input everybody!

I'm glad to see I'm not crazy for liking Morales. I had posted a similar question right after the season ended and everybody was recommending that I keep Berkman, while Morales got no love at all. Which really suprised me since I was pretty high on Morales even then and Berkman kinda scares me (though he is a consistent producer).

Of course, any alternate opinions would still be greatly appreciated!!!!
