Thinking about trading Scherzer for Andrus in a 11 team mixed keeper league. What do you think?
We get to keep nine keepers. Here is my prospective keeper list (will need to whittle down) ITs not great as I took over for a non-responsive team in the last month and tried my best to salvage some keepers for 2010.
Zobrist, Peralta, Ian Stewart, Cuddyer, Ludwick, Jake Fox, Casey McGehee, Cliff Lee, Javier Vasquez, Scherzer(unless I trade him for Andrus), Mariano, Heath Bell
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
My advice with that list of keepers is to fully commit to rebuilding. "hi, my name is misc1111 and I will not win this league in 2010 or 2011". That keeper list is brutal, and you need to fix it.
As far as Scherzer vs Andrus.... I like Max a lot, but he is scary because of his shoulder. What you have to ask yourself is what is the high-end expectation on Andrus? .300-100-10-70-40 is absolute maximum that I see him putting up, and it could never even get that high.
I take Scherzer because I feel that he has more upside, and that is what you team needs is upside. If this was an established team that is keeping 15 players in a 12 team league and wanted to keep a SS that might help them win this year by putting up some SB and R and not killing the Avg numbers, then maybe you would keep Elvis. But in your case, I try to catch lightning in a bottle and pick a potential superstar, and to me Scherzer is more likely to be that than Andrus is.
Well, I appreciate the brutal honesty. But we do work with long term contracts so its not just keeping a player, its also about at what price and what year of his contract. So during the draft I should be able to get some good talent for $$.
i.e. i traded for zobrist who is a $1 player in his first year. I can keep zobrist for $1 for the next two years or even sign him to longer next year with some additional dollars per year.
Scherzer is $7 in his second year while Andrus is $4 in his first year. Probably i should have put that in my orig post but was concerned about league mates snooping around here.

Yeah man, you need to include salaries and cost for contract extensions etc in order to get a more complete answer. My policy is to answer questions on here assuming that all the information that I need to know has been given, figuring that if there were important factors in a decision, the OP would have said so.
I can keep Scherzer for $7 next year and then I lose him. Or sign him to a long term deal where you add $5 for every year that you sign him. i.e. two year contract would cost me $17 next year and $17 in 2011 and then I would lose him.
Andrus would be under my control if I could get the trade done, next year for $4 and then I can sign him to a long term deal next year depending on how he does. Again at $5 per year of the contract paid in full every year.
Even with the contracts in play I still would keep Scherzer. He just got traded and should flourish this year unless his shoulder blows out. Andrus is good but has no power and I don't even think he will get to 10 HR and 60 RBI. Stealing 40 bases is also a high estimate although he is known for his speed. Scherzer is the better keeper here. Stick with him.
I would make the deal. You need some young cost effective starters to be able to rebuild. Having a cheap SS, who should start to put up some decent numbers can't hurt. The money difference and length of the contracts makes me do this.
Also, I'm not sold on Scherzer. The injuries are one thing. Going to the AL, and with a team lacking in defense and offense? Smells like trouble. Andrus is a young speedster at a shallow position, in a good offense.
Do you have to keep 9 guys? I mean with that list of keepers I would really think about only keeping the guys that can help you and not try and make a guess at whether these guys will be worth owning in two years. Odds are pretty good that Andrus will be worth owning as a backup/spot starter but in an 11 team league I really doubt you want him starting for you. Max could be a starter but he could also turn into a very nice middle reliever. So I would suggest not keeping either and going into the draft short a keeper or two but saving money for guys who are more likely to help you turn this team around.

Thanks for all the responses. I dont have to keep nine. As I said, I took over a bad team that had a non-responsive owner who was not paying attention. Coming from non-keeper AL only league, it is a challenge as this league is quite complex.
