Brandon Wood vs Delmon Young

Postby curl » Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:44 am

Was recently offered the following trade: my Brandon Wood and Jeremy Guthrie for Delmon Young and Brandon McCarthy in a 20 team, 25 keeper dynasty league.

It's probably not close enough for me to take, I was just curious about what other views people have on Wood and Young. Both were top rated prospects a few years ago, but Young seems to have regressed and Wood has never really been given regular ABs at the majors (and hasn't done anything at all with the ABs he has been given). But they're still both only 24 so there is still time and it looks like Wood will be given a crack at the starting job this year. So, what do you think? Where do you see these 2 guys being a few years from now?

Of the two, I will take Wood. Young is just a buffoon. i don't expect a lot from Wood but he will see his first full season as a regular which means he might get comfortable. Young has the talent and has had the playing time but he has never shown anything and I don't expect it to come.

I would also take Wood over Delmon. Wood will have his first season to play full time and has great power potential. I am down on Young and he has a lot to prove but just looks like a bust.

I'd rather have Wood. I won't completely write off Delmon yet, but he's done very little to inspire much hope. At least with Wood you have a chance at cheap pop from the SS/3B positions. It'll almost certainly come with a low BA given his high strike out rate... but he did make some positive gains in Triple-A making contact. Also, in a league as large as yours I'd prefer Guthrie to McCarthy. With the signing of Harden, possible continued interest in Sheets, Feldman, Feliz, Holland, etc. McCarthy might be a mop up/long reliever and not even a starter. I will suggest that if that owner is desperate to get rid of Delmon that I'd try and move an unexciting older "stable," option for him and see if the raw tools come together. Guys with Delmon's raw goods can occasionally just put it together (even if the numbers give little hope to that).
