This is a team that I co-own with board member BobTheMule. We have a pretty good idea as to who we want to keep, but are still discussing a couple of options.
16 team H2H points league. First basemen are valued slightly higher than with most points systems because putouts are a stat. Say 1B gets a 5% boost in points from putouts. The rest of the scoring is pretty standard.
Keep 9 Majors, and 7 Minors. We can deal, but I would like opinions based on what you would do with the current set of players if trades were not doable. Start C, 1b, 2b, 3b, SS, 3 OF, 2UTIl, 5SP and 2 RP. We took over a BAD team two seasons ago, finished about .500 the first year, were a top-4 team in '09 and our aim is to contend for the league title in '10.
Majors roster (keep 9)
Gerald Laird Chris Iannetta Albert Pujols Adrian Gonzalez James Loney Robinson Cano Clint Barmes Ryan Zimmerman Gordon Beckham Matt Kemp Justin Upton BJ Upton Gerardo Parra Colby Rasmus Rajai Davis Clayton Kershaw Francisco Liriano Chad Billingsley Micah Owings Jeremy Sowers Chris Volstad Kevin Gregg Brett Anderson Cole Hamels Aaron Laffey David Purcey Fernando Rodney Matt Capps Chad Qualls

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ VERY IMPRESSIVE GROUP!
I like the above list, with exception of Hamels over Beckham. I wish I could give more information on the minor leaguers, but that's not my strength. Posey is a no brainer, but you probably already knew that.
The reason I like Hamels over Beckham is because Hamels has proven himself to be a proven commodity. Beckham really hasn't done much to warrant himself to be a top 9 keeper with the amount of talent on your roster. Remember that Sexy Alexei in 2009 was the hot SS sleeper but ended up on many FA list (or just rode the bench most season). Hamels is one more season away from his injury and had some impressive performances towards the end of last season. And considering you start 5 SP, with 16 teams, that's the top 80 gone. I have a feeling pitchers will go fast in the draft and batters later. You have more of a shot of picking Beckham up in the draft than Hamels.
And would you deal Gordon Beckham for the 1 (15)?
Well you can only keep so many, so with that in mind not a bad deal. However, I ws going to say I'd probably have kept Anderson with your initial 9. His ballpark is so good, he got better as the year went along. I think he's capable of being a top 20 pitcher this year. That said, you can't keep them all, and getting picks for guys you weren't going to keep is always a good move.
My 9 Major League keepers would be: Pujols Gonzalez Cano Zimmerman Kemp Justin Upton Kershaw Beckham Hamels
shop B.J. Upton. He still has a great deal of believers, and I was going into this past season. While the lack of power can be explained by having off-season shoulder surgery, his lack of discipline at the dish and continued high whiff numbers can't. He really slowed down on the base paths in the second half, and overall, I think he's very overrated.
Hamels on the flip side is going to be vastly underrated given his season. I would expect a bounce back to previous season's form. A front 1-2 of Kershaw and Hamels is tantalizing, plus I'd imagine you could get a nice pick for B.J. Upton that could be spent a number of ways.
I wouldn't do the Beckham deal, basically because I'd just assume shop B.J. Upton if I were you. Beckham really managed his k-rate and worked a respectable walk rate for a rookie last year. His ballpark is awesome, and I think he can be a 20-25 HR threat next year. He should post really nice counting stats (runs and rbi's) given that he almost certainly will hit in the heart of the order (recently read Ozzie Guillen stating at the winter meetings that if they don't bring in a classic leadoff guy he'd consider Beckham there).
As for the minors: Posey Montero Morrison Stanton Matusz Feliz Brown
Beckham's walk to K is a bit worrisome, he also isn't really all that close to the big league level. Brown is much closer, and posted some awesome stats at a higher level of competition. I would also give some consideration to Parker over Morrison depending on how many 1B you can start, as Pujols and Gonzalez will be entrenched for a long time, and Parker isn't far from big league ready. Matusz/Feliz/Posey will all offer your majors squad a shot in the arm right out the gates. You have a lot of high minors high ceiling prospects, and reason to be excited with your group.
I know you had mentioned NOT discussing potential trades, but I'll throw this out there for your minors group: Consider shopping Posey in a deal for Carlos Santana. I am a Giants fan, and really like Buster Posey, but Carlos Santana's offensive ceiling is higher. Posey is likely to hit over .300 with 15-20 HR's, but Santana is capable of hitting many more HR's (think 30+) and posting an average in the vicinity of .300. His BB:K is awesome (BB's more then he K's). And all the talk going into next season is likely to be about Posey at the position. I think both will be called up around the same time, and would in no way be surprised to see Santana actually beat Posey to regular full time AB's.
I am a Parker fan, (have seen him throw about 15 single-A games live) and even though he had a TJ surgery a month or so ago, I dont think we will keep him. We can start up to 3 1B, and the 2 UTIL spots are best served by having 3 1B at them because of the putouts points we get.
I totally agree on BJ Upton and Hamels.
As a previous post mentioned, 16 teams starting 5 SP each means that SP gets shallow, especially with the size of our bench. Normally I dont like keeping SP over hitters, but because of how shallow this league's pitching is, we were thinking about keeping Billingsley and shopping both Beckham and BJ. Keeping Beckham would come at the expense of Cano most likely.
As for the minors, I think you have it right B-Chad. That is the group that we are currently looking at, but I think that Brown and Beckham are trade bait, and if the right deal comes for Brown, we wouldn't be super upset with keeping Beckham.
