Cain/Span for Posada/Cantu/Uggla and a pick?(WHIR)

Postby kidsilk » Sun Nov 29, 2009 2:07 pm

I am in a 12 team dynasty league where we each take control of the teams and farm systems of an AL team and a NL team. I have the Giants and Twins. I need a catcher though since I have traded Mauer for Utley. IT is a 5x5 roto style league.

I have been offered:

His:
Posada
Cantu
Uggla
2nd round Minor league dispersal pick

for my:
Matt Cain
Denard Span

My Roster:

C-Morales/Posey
1B-Morneau
2B-Velez
SS-Theriot
3B-Sandoval
CI-Ramirez
MI-Harris
OF-Cuddyer
OF-Kubel
OF-Soriano
UTI-Reynolds

Rotation:
SP-Lincecum
SP-Cain
SP-Slowey
SP-Baker
SP-Blackburn
BN-Sanchez
BN-Liriano
BN-Lilly
BN-Lannan
BN-Duensing
BN-Bonser
BN-Sandowski

Bullpen

Wilson
Nathan
Affeldt
Mijares
Rauch
Neshek
BN-Romo
BN-Valdez

What do you guys think? There is still the FA bidding that will go on later this winter but not sure if I should pass up getting a quality C like Posada and two other quality bats as my pitching staff is pretty good as it is. But I would also be losing some speed with losing Span. I dont know. What do you guys think?

I don't know what type of talent is likely to be available in your free agent draft but this deal looks fairly solid for you for the near future as Uggla solves a major issue for you at MI and Cantu will help your lineup as a CI. Posada will be a nice stopgap that can be moved later when Posey takes over for you long term at catcher. I don't see Span as a burner and you should be able to find another outfielder with speed if you choose to flip Uggla or Cantu down the road. It does not look like you will seriously miss Cain as you should have Bumgarner on your minor league roster who should be up at some point in mid-2010 to stay. It's close and I could see making an arguement aganist this deal but I think it should help you push closer to the top in 2010 and does not cost you too much. Good luck! ;-D

single season this is alot better than a dynasty; which you are giving up alot of youth. these are the kinds of deals I rarely make in long term leagues

I forgot to mention that I have Utley, dont know why I didnt list him so Uggla would go to MI, Cantu would probably be a bench player and Posada would give me a formidable presence at C. Any other opinions? I don't think losing Span is that big but Cain is a stud although my staff is good even without him.

On another note, I have been offered Dioner Navarro for two young minors Twins pitchers in single A. Would that be a better option to help my catcher situation?

I also like this, depending on your dropper. Cain's a good player, but Uggla's very useful. Cantu doesn't suck, and Span's nothing to grab hold off.

Cain's an injury risk, IMHO, and this level of help for this and next year in the person of Uggla is nice. Posada might not last the year, but he'll cover 'til Posey comes and you might sell Posada for something or anything.

Please try to get an extra prospect pick or a higher one than a 2nd rounder. Cain's perceived value should be a little better than this. Don't push too hard, though; he just needs this more than you do.
