Rank these SP prospects

Postby slickterp » Sun Nov 22, 2009 8:50 pm

They rank fairly close for me, I guess this is about how I would have them:

Bumgarner
Jhoulys Chacin
Aaron Crow
Jeremy Hellickson
Brandon Erbe

Bum
Hell - If he hadn't missed time last year I would be tempted to put him 1st since he continues to put up big K rates and low BB rates each year. big gap imo between these two and the lower 3.

Crow - tough to rank draftees compared to established MiLB'ers. could flipflop with Erbe.
Erbe -
Chacin - He would rank 3rd outside of COL

1. Bumgarner - the most upside out of this group and a great home ballpark
2. Chacin - I am going against the grain but Chacin posts very good k rates plus gets a lot of groundballs. Chacin pitches in Colorado but Hellickson will pitch in the AL East....I'll take the pitcher who keeps the ball on the ground over 50 plus percent.
3. Hellickson - I do think it's close between he and Chacin, but Colorado is not the death wish in fantasy it used to be. Hellickson still needs to break into Tampa's rotation and is an extreme fly ball pitcher in a bad division to give up fly balls.....New Yankee Stadium, Fenway, etc.....not many pitcher's park or weak lineups in the AL East.
4. Crow/Erbe - This is tough as Erbe does have great stuff and if everything clicks he will be better than Crow but Crow is the safer pick and more likely to be a solid starter.

1. Hellickson (at this point many if not most people have him ranked higher than Bumgarner
2. Bumgarner

3. Crow
4. Chacin

5. Erbe - considered a probable reliever at this point, but still has a chance to become a starter.

I don't believe this is true. I've seen this in a few places (e.g., Project Prospect), but not too many, and definitely not most.

I think the only reason you haven't seen more is a lot of places have yet to publish their lists. I think they'll be pretty neck and neck on most lists with Hellickson higher on teh majority. Everyone seems pretty worked up about Bum's loss of velocity at the end of last year.
In my fridge: Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS), Central Waters Peruvian Morning, Bell's Batch 10,000, Dale's Pale Ale, Capital Brewery Amber, New Glarus Moon Man, and Guinness.

At least until his velocity returns at the beginning of this year.
