Non-baseball related question for you North Americans.

I got invited to be a groomsman at my former co-worker's wedding. I'm not really close to the guy, but I felt bad about saying no and told him I would do it. This weekend, we went out for suit fitting and I fully expected him to cover the cost for the rental. He didn't. I have never been to a wedding in Canada, so I started asking around and I have been told that the groom would usually take care of the groomsmen rentals. Is that usually the case?

I'm gonna be spending close to $500 bucks for this guy's wedding, between the rental, wedding present and driving two hours each way for the wedding. If the guy was my bff, I wouldn't be this cheap.
