Just finshed a 3 round minor league draft. There were a lot of hold overs from previous years but here they are. Best? Worst? Why?
Team A: J. Heyward (Atl - OF), J. Montero (NYY - C), Y. Alonso (Cin - 1B) Two top 5 prospects, and a top 30 is hard to beat. Team L: J. Smoak (Tex - 1B), M. Stanton (Fla - OF), G. Green (Oak - SS) Smoak and Stanton are top prospects, Green isn't but intriguing. Team E: L. Morrison (Fla - 1B), C. Friedrich (Col - SP), I. Davis (NYM - 1B) Team C: D. Jennings (TB - OF), M. The top 2 are easily the best. I could see L>A if Green fulfills his potential. I'm not a big fan of Alonso relative to other 1B prospects.
I ranked B low b/c I'm not a beliver in loading up on 1B power bats. Those are a dime a dozen, use MiLB rosters to stash impact bats elsewhere.
G is worst b/c I don't think Arencibia is going to amount to a whole lot and I don't see much value in MiLB RPs or SPs who many think could end up in the pen.
F got 3rd over K b/c Santana is MLB-ready and he's a catcher.
In order Team A: J. Heyward (Atl - OF), J. Montero (NYY - C), Y. Alonso (Cin - 1B) -I'm not a big fan of Alonso, but I have Heyward & Montero ranked 1-2. I probably have Montero higher than many, but he's at worst top 5. Team L: J. Smoak (Tex - 1B), M. Stanton (Fla - OF), G. Green (Oak - SS) I'm not too worried about Smoak or Stanton's down years, both guys can mash. If Green can stay at SS he probably has some fantasy value. Team F: C. Santana (Cle - C), R. Westmoreland (Bos - OF), C. Kelly (Bos - SP) Very nice group. Santana is top 5. Westmoreland had a nice debut and has all the tools in the world. Kelly was dominant at low levels, but does he want to be a pitcher and is his stuff good enough to dominate in the majors? Team C: D. Jennings (TB - OF), M. Perez (Tex - SP), M. Taylor (Phi - OF) 3 high prospects who all had strong 2009 seasons. Team B: P. Alvarez (Pit - 1B), T. Beckham (TB - SS), E. Hosmer (KC - 1B) I'm not high on Beckham or Hosmer but both were high picks so they'll be given every chance to turn things back around. I like Alvarez (3B) enough to justify ranking this high. Team K: H. Rondon (Cle - SP), B. Lawrie (Mil - 2B), J. Vitters (ChC - 3B) Lawrie had a nice season and is young. Rondon looks really good. I worry about Vitters as he struggles mightily everytime he moves up. I think he's fallen to the Cubs #3 prospect. Team D: K. Drabek (Phi - OF), J. Darnell (SD - 3B), N. Weglarz (Cle - OF) I like all 3 a lot, but Drabek is probably the only one who can be a real impact player fantasy wise. Team I: D. Brown (Phi - OF), F. Freeman (Atl - 1B), C. Cosby (Det - SP) Brown and Crosby moved up a good amount in 09. Brown should be top 10. Crosby a nice return from Tommy John. Freeman struggled at AA, but he's still young. Team H: S. Castro (ChC - SS), M. Moustakas (KC - 3B), T. Alderson (Pit - SP) Castro had one of the biggest breakouts league wide. Moustkas took a big step back. I'm down on Alderson. I don't think he has the stuff to be successful in the majors. Team E: L. Morrison (Fla - 1B), C. Friedrich (Col - SP), I. Davis (NYM - 1B) Friedrich had a dominating season. We'll see how he does in the upper levels. Davis had a very nice bounce back from the disastrous 08. Morrison hasn't shown the power yet he'd need to be a notable 1B. Team J: J. Mejia (NYM - SP), C. Carter (Oak - 1B), P. Venditte (NYY - P) I like Carter, but if he doesn't cut down the Ks it'll make things difficult. My opinion of Mejia dropped recently when I read his secondary stuff is pretty much non-existent. He's still young and throws hard, but I think he's overrated at this point. Venditte has much more value in real life than fantasy. He's also 24 and yet to pitch in the upper levels. Team G: C. Kimbrel (Atl - RP), J. Arencibia (Tor - C), E. Beltre (Tex - OF) - Somebody didn't do their homework. Kimbrel can be a closer if he can cut down his walks. Beltre's still young for his level, but his swing at everything approach will only be exploited more as he moves up. Arencibia also struggled this year and took a step backwards.
