I am in a 12 team H2H standard 5x5 category league where we can keep 4 players for next season. Here are my top 8:
Pablo Sandoval Nick Markakis Joey Votto Brandon Phillips Tori Hunter Adam Wainright Johan Santana John Lackey
I am definately leaning towards votto but am very undecided about the rest. i kept markakis, phillips and santana last year and ended up 3rd in a money league. This year i seem to have a few more possible keepers to choose from. Please help!

As much as I like Markakis, he had some ugly stretches this year, and OF is replaceable even with separated out RF. As much as I like Sandoval, he's only a 3B next year, and his numbers are going to look a lot worse there than they did at C this year (for us Yahoo! users). Hunter is 74 years old and coming off of injury. Lackey seems a little off.
Phillips is still a credible stud at a thin position. Votto's a comer, and even though I have him as the most replaceable of the 4 I've recommended keeping, he's got some nice upside. The two pitchers should give you a great foundation. Wainwright was nearly a Cy winner this year (assuming he doesn't pull of the upset), and Santana's surely got one more super duper nice year.
If I upgraded through trades, it would be to get a better hitter to replace Wainwight (whom I would try to trade after that year) or to upgrade Votto, who might be a little underpowered to be your 1B (I like him more for UTIL).

Pretty easy choice for me. Markakis is still only 25 years old, and has proven to be a 300 hitter with lots of doubles. I would take the chance that one day those doubles start turning into a few more homers at his age.
I think you are right in that it boils down to Markakis or Wainright/Santana. I'd be tempted to keep Wainright over Santana. But regardless of which one you keep, I'd go with the hitter as my last keeper. With keeping only 4, I'd go 3 hitters and 1 pitcher.
Joey Votto 1b Brandon Phillips 2b Pablo Sandoval 3b Nick Markakis OF Johan Santana
Isn't Johan always overrated in fantasy circles?
I would trade him if I were you. He might be the best fantasy pitcher but I'm worried about his durability and his team. Sure they won't be as injury prone this year (you hope) but there again there are issues in the pen with middle relief and other things. Wainwright is locked in and with talent behind him.
If you can package Johan and Votto for Pujols go try. Try to package Wainwright and Philips for Kinsler/Utley. Don't declare keepers before you try and trade first.
