They brought the kid up on May 6th, 2007 in a year when they went on to finish 20 games under .500.
There would be no arbitration discussion if they'd just been patient.
meh, he was ready to be called up. i'm sure it increased revenue and i doubt letting him just blow through AAA would have done any good development-wise. sure it ended up costing them money down the line but i can't really blame them for the move at the time.
what they did with posey and bumgarner last year, however, was retarded as all hell.

This moronic move is going to cost EVERYONE millions in the long run, and all for a month of ticket sales for the amazing 2007 Giants.

Because everyone knew then that he would be the best pitcher in the game?
Most above average 1st yr arb pitchers get 3-4M (correct me if I'm wrong) and that is what he would have gotten if he was merely a very good pitcher. But you're right, it's unfortunate for the Giants that he became other-worldly. they aren't a small payroll team and his arb award is unlikely to have prevented them from signing/retaining any other players.
And I agree with GF that losing that extra year of team control over Posey and Bumgarner is a bigger issue than Lincecum being super2.

My point is that MLB has no business fighting against Lincecum in this arbitration hearing. The Giants set this wheel into motion under rules agreed upon by both sides. Deal with the fact that he's one of the best super-twos since the rule was established and pay the kid.

With all the money the kid is about to get, and every penny has been earned imo, that should keep him well stocked for a year or two. I wish i was his roommate.
