Catcher question

Postby Johnny Tuttle » Wed Oct 21, 2009 10:52 am

In my keeper league, I can trade Bumgarner for Posey to full in my C slot long term.

Or I could trade Heyward/Bumgarner for Mauer. This would mean pushing LaPorta off of keeper list, but I might be able to trade him for a prospect (I still have room on my prospect list).

Do either of these look like winners? I've floated already sending LaPo/Bum for Mauer. That's one I take, I'd think.

****
Here's my full team, in case folks want more info. Sorry for the long-winded set up.

We keep 19 MLB players and up to 10 minor leaguers (no true minor league FA).

I'm coming off of my second year in the league; I've got back-to-back bronze medals.

Bold are the 19 I expect to keep. *Means I can demote the guy to the protected prospect list and keep him that way.

C: Alex Avila*
1B: Konerko
2B: Uggla
3B: A-Rod
SS: Hanley Ramirez
LF: Holliday
CF: J. Bruce
RF: Dunn
UTIL: M. LaPorta
UTIL: Aramis Ramirez
BN: G. Beckham
BN: Fowler
BN: Chris Iannetta
BN: Eric Young, Jr.*
BN: Morneau

SP: C.C. Sabbathia
SP: Peavy
SP: Wainwright
RP: K-Rod

RP: Fuentes
P: M. Rivera
P: K. Wood
P: J. Pineiro
P:

BN: Gallardo
BN: Jimenez

BN: Daniel Hudson*

DL: Junichi Tazawa*
DL: Oswalt
DL: J. Santana

Protected Prospects:
Jason Heyward, OF, ATL
Madison Bumgarnger, LHP, SF
Aaron Hicks, OF, MIN
BL's 2010 2nd Round Prospect Pick
CP's 2010 3rd Round Prospect Pick
(I traded away my own 3rd rounder but kept my 2nd and 1st rounders.)

*Avila, Young, Hudson, and Tazawa will be demoted to my prospect list. I get to keep them without burning spots on my 19-deep MLB keeper list in other words.

I'd trade Bumgarner for Posey.
Bumgarner didn't really impress me and I think Posey will be great.

See, that's my suspicion, too. I do think I have a new near Lincecum in Bum, but even if he is, that's a ways away, and Posey might best Benji Molina's best years, no? That would plunk him fairly high up the catching ranks.

Too bad this fellow won't take Hudson/Avila for Posey.

At the risk of derailing my own thread, I'm going to post a second deal here.

I give a non-keeper (admittedly my best one) in Fuentes. I get Eric Hosmer.

Hosmer's struggles might have been the eyes, and even though high school 1B flame out a lot, he was purportedly the best HS bat in a long time. In the spring, KLaw had him ahead of both Alvarez and Smoak.

And if I make no trades this offseason at all, I lose Fuentes for nothing.

There's no reason not to take this, right? I'd still have Wood 'round if I wanted to trade a closer.

2nd Deal: There's no reason not to. You already said you'd be losing Fuentes for nothing, might as well get something for him.

1st Deal: Bum didn't impress me, sure he had a decent first outing, but IIRC it was against the Padres. And there's only one Lincecum out of how many other hyped up prospects that actually pan out? Go with Posey, he's going to be starting next year, as Bengie's most likely going to want a multi-year deal and the Giants shouldn't give that to him (although they might, since they are the Giants)

I've gotten a nibble on LaPorta/D Hudson/Bum for Mauer.

Even though I really believe in those three kids, I'd have to do that, right?

I'm going to wait to see what happens here before I decide on Posey (Same fellow owns Posey and Mauer). I just fear that Posey's more like a Suzuki or a later Kendall than a Sandoval or a McCann. The lack of power's not all that enticing.

Hold out for the Mauer deal. Even if Posey ends up being Suzuki... that isn't that bad, is it? A C with a decent avg and speed and a bit of power.

I'm getting very cold feet about trading Bumgarner. The other owner has promised an answer in the next week.

How much of Mauer's 2009 do we expect to see moving forward? Looking at his career numbers, he's got a lot of years that would make me regret this. If I got the 2009 version or something even close to it, I'd love the deal.

I wonder if I'm just buying very high on an injury prone guy who won't normally hit homers.

The Fuentes trade is a no-brainer.

That's what I'm thinking.

If I could get the fellow to agree to LaPorta, Tazawa, and Hudson, would that work better?

I'm not sure he would if he's got cold feet even with Bumgarner in, but this way, I'd be giving two good P prospects, but not a top 10 guy. And LaPorta will hit, but I'd be OK with that.
