I hate to be the serious one (really, I do), but the first tie-breaker is always head to head, and then it USED to be coin flip for the second tie-breaker. Now I believe it's record within division. I know this because it was determined the Braves would have the home field for a 1-game playoff if there were to be one because they had a better record in their division than the Rockies in theirs.

Sorry, that isn't quite right.

from http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... id=7018116 on 9/17/09:

For the first time this year, tiebreakers are in and coin flips are out.
...
The traditional and historic practice of using coin flips to determine which team hosts a one-game playoff for a division title or a Wild Card berth has been left in the past.

On the recommendation of the collective general managers, the owners voted this past January to end the practice and replaced it with a series of on-field tiebreakers, beginning with head-to-head records.

You see, I can be serious too. But Nerf, don't take the world seriously.... That's it!! The World Series!! (OK, I doubt anyone here is going to get that reference... That line is from a really pretty bad doublemint gum commercial from I think the 70s where Albner Doubleday is trying to come up with a name for the World Series, says don't take the World Serious and presto, the name is born. It was stupid 30+ years ago, and it is stupid now, but I couldn't resist)
There are a few things with the New York Yankees that never change. That's pride, tradition, and most of all, we have the greatest fans in the world. -Derek Jeter, 9/21/08 -- last words from old Yankee Stadium
