I just watched the announcement live that Rio De Janeiro will host the 2016 summer games, beating out Madrid in the final voting. Tokyo and Chicago were eliminated in the previous round, Chicago being the first eliminated.

Doesn't Rio have some of the worst air quality in the world? It'll be interesting to see how they handle that following last year's issues in Bejing.

I think the scantly clad costumes the Brazilian ladies wear in the opening ceremonies will more than make up for the poor air quality. :-D

Interesting that Rio won the bid although I would have thought that it was either them or Chicago. Brazil actually hosts the World Cup in 2014 and they're going to have to step up plans for building new facilities/infrastructure as well as upgrading what they currently have. Anyway, it's pretty massive to have the World Cup and the Olympics in the neighborhood within a two year time span.

As for air quality, I reckon the bigger problem than air in Rio is the usual gun fights between rival drug cartels there.

I am quite happy my hometown didn't win. Maybe I should go buy a nice TV to watch to 2016 olympics on with the dollars I'm no longer going to have to fork over in corruption and boondoggle taxes.
