Playoff Rotations? Which pitchers are affected this week?

Postby Splendid61 » Mon Sep 28, 2009 1:38 am

What pitchers are in jeopardy of losing a start this week while playoff teams set their rotations for the postseason?

It also makes sense to discuss pitchers who will be shut down because their teams have nothing to play for. For example, Max Scherzer made his final start of the season on Fri 9/25.

According to ESPN, the Dodgers will be going with a 6-man rotation in their 6 games this week.
9/28 - Kuroda, 9/29 - Billingsley, 9/30 - Padilla, 10/2 - Garland, 10/3 - Wolf, 10/4 - Kershaw
Are those scheduled starters likely to change? What's the Dodgers expected playoff rotation?

According to ESPN, the Angels will be going with a 5-man rotation in their 7 games this week, but haven't named who will start the season finale on 10/4.
9/28 - Santana, 9/29 - Kazmir, 9/30 - Weaver, 10/1 - Lackey, 10/2 - Saunders, 10/3 - Santana, 10/4 - ?????
Who's likely to start the season finale? Scott Kazmir? What's the Angels expected playoff rotation?

According to ESPN, the Cardinals will be going with a 5-man rotation in their 6 games this week.
9/29 - Piniero, 9/30 - Smoltz, 10/1 - Carpenter, 10/2 - Wainwright, 10/3 - Lohse, 10/4 - Piniero
What's the Cardinals expected playoff rotation? If Joel Piniero is part of it, will he make his scheduled start on 10/4?

According to ESPN, the Twins will be going with a 5-man rotation in their 7 games this week.
9/28 - Blackburn, 9/29 - Duensing, 9/30 - Pavano, 10/1 - Baker, 10/2 - Liriano, 10/3 - Blackburn, 10/4 - Duensing
The Twins will likely be going all out to make the playoffs. If they clinch or are eliminated before 10/4, will Brian Duensing make his scheduled start on 10/4? Duensing (age 26) has thrown 153.2 IP this year, he pitched 138.2 IP last year, 167.1 IP in 2007, 160.0 IP in 2006.

According to ESPN, the Phillies will be going with a 5-man rotation in their 7 games this week.
9/28 - Hamels, 9/29 - Happ, 9/30 - Lee, 10/1 - Martinez, 10/2 - Blanton, 10/3 - Hamels, 10/4 - Happ
What's the Phillies expected playoff rotation? Is Pedro Martinez likely to make

For the Marlins, Josh Johnson missed his start today with the flu. The Marlins have been limiting his pitches over the last few weeks, are they likely to shut Josh Johnson down for the final week of the season or will he get another start?

Yankees are going as follows:
9/28 Gaudin mlb.com
9/29 Burnett mlb.com
9/30 Joba mlb.com
10/1 Off
10/2 Sabathia mlb.com
10/3 Pettitte educated guess
10/4 Burnett educated guess

I'd expect neither of Sabathia, Pettitte, or Burnett to go more than 100 pitches, maybe closer to 90. Burnett was originally supposed to pitch today, but flipped with Gaudin because Burnett's father is having triple bypass today. The Yankees could conceivably still flip Pettitte and Burnett once they get to the playoffs since they will have an off day b/n Game 1 and 2, but I expected Pettitte to take the ball in Game 2 and 5(if necessary). Joba will be pitching out of the BP in the division series, assuming he makes the roster which I expect but isn't set in stone. Gaudin and Joba will be dueling it out this week to see who would be the 4th starter in the ALCS and WS(if the Yankees make either).
