I was going to write something against expanding the playoffs but then I read Gammon's article more closely and it's not a bad idea.
If I understood it right, there will be 2 wild card teams and they would play each other in an extra series to see who would advance to the division series.
So those teams that won their division aren't hurt by this change at all. In fact, the team with the best league record will gain by facing a very weary wild card winner. This system actually diminishes the value of winning the wild card spot.
The downside is that a team like the Red Sox or Yankees might end up a wild card team even though they have the second best record in the league. Forcing them into a 3-game series to get into the division series would be quite unfair.
