Study says spanking is bad for young kids

Postby knapplc » Tue Sep 15, 2009 2:44 pm

TUESDAY, Sept. 15 (HealthDay News) -- Children who are spanked as 1-year-olds are more likely to behave aggressively and perform worse on cognitive tests as toddlers than children who are spared the punishment, new research shows.

Though the negative effects of spanking were "modest," the study adds to a growing body of literature that's finding spanking isn't good for children.

"Age 1 is a key time for establishing the quality of the parenting and the relationship between parent and the child," said study author Lisa J. Berlin, a research scientist at the Center for Child and Family Policy at Duke University. "Spanking at age 1 reflects a negative dynamic, and increases children's aggression at age 2."

The study is published in the September/October issue of Child Development.

I'm pro-spanking, it was a major deterrent for me as a child and I harbored no ill will against my parents after the spankings. That said, why on earth would you spank a 1-year-old? The whole purpose of spanking is to serve as a deterrent as children start to learn right from wrong. 1-year-olds definitely can't begin learning this kind of stuff. I'm not a parent so it's hard for me to guess, but I don't really think spanking would be beneficial until your child is 2 or 3. :-?

Link?

I'm pro-spanking, but starting before age 1 on a real spanking is quite harsh. :-b Not sure how old my boy was for his first, it was just too long ago, but he had to be at least 2 or 3. And it's possible he was as old as 5. I know he got one at 5, just not sure if it was his first or not.

People need to be told that spanking a one-year-old isn't good? Really?

Dogs get spanked almost from birth (usually for potty training purposes), so why not kids under 1?

:-b

Kidding about the kid part. ;-)

I've never spanked my dog. I would probably spank my kid though. And I've spanked my monkey more times than I can count.

I am pro spanking, but for 2 and a half year olds and up. Problem is, my wife is anti-spanking. I think I am slowly starting to win out, as my two boys seems to take advantage of her 'harsh' punishments. I highly doubt I could spank a little girl, if I was to have one in the future. I am somewhat of a softy.
My biggest problem, though, is that I tend to laugh at all of the crzy stuff my boys do, and spanking with a big :-D on my face is somewhat counter-productive.
