Bob Elliot of the Toronto Sun reports that the Red Sox offered the Blue Jays six pitchers for Roy Halladay at the trading deadline. The names: Daniel Bard, Michael Bowden, Clay Buchholz, Felix Doubront, Nick Hagadone and Justin Masterson. That's quite an impressive array of names, and it's shocking Toronto didn't snap it up. The scout that revealed this deal said the Jays had difficulty projecting Masterson's future, and -- probably most important --- "the Jays were worried about Halladay beating them next year." Obviously, Masterson and Hagadone are no longer with the Sox club so it's unlikely a deal could be reached in the offseason. If it's going to take more than that package to land Halladay, GM J.P. Ricciardi won't find any takers.
I'm sorry but there's almost no way that this is in any way true. You're talking about the top six Red Sox pitching prospects at the time (minus Casey Kelly and Tazawa). Now is Doc worth that? Maybe. But is he worth six young, cost-controlled players, when there's no guarantee the Sox could lock him up after next season? Not a chance.
im not a BOS insider but i think a deal with Halladay for an extension might have been considered before they proceed with the trade, something like the Johan situation.
It's possible that toronto had the pick of 3 or 4 of those pitchers instead of receiving all of them. But for the most part I see Toronto lacking a plan which will lead to them wallowing in mediocrity for a long time. just my two cents.
JP Ricciardi hasn't been calling the shots for the Jays for some time now. If true (Elliott is a very weak source on trade rumours), this was a deal turned down by Paul Beeston and the higher-ups.
Though the Toronto Sun reported that the Sox offered a package of six pitchers to the Blue Jays for Roy Halladay (Clay Buchholz, Justin Masterson, Daniel Bard, Michael Bowden, Felix Doubront, and Nick Hagadone), that report is apparently not correct.
Asked if there was any truth to the offer, Sox general manager Theo Epstein responded "Nope" in an email.
The Sox went hard after a couple of pitchers before the trading deadline, including Halladay and Seattle pitcher Felix Hernandez.
It was reported earlier that Seattle (NOT Toronto) had the option of choosing from that list of players for King Felix. The M's could not actually have all of those players. And the value of King Felix >>> the value of Halladay.
"I do not think baseball of today is any better than it was 30 years ago... I still think Radbourne is the greatest of the pitchers." John Sullivan 1914-Old athletes never change.

If I were Theo I would have offered all 6 for Felix. You don't let Nick Hagadone stop you from getting Felix.
