Who to keep? WHIR

Postby lilfrier » Tue Sep 08, 2009 7:51 pm

I got buried this year by a horrendously tough schedule. We're going into the first offseason of a 5-player keeper league. We start C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, MI, CI, 3 OF, DH, 2 Util, 5 SP, and 3 RP. We also have 7 bench spots, a DL spot, and a minors spot. It's a pretty deep scoring system, 12-team H2H CBS points league. Here is my roster (total points in parentheses):

C - Russell Martin (278.0)
1B - Pablo Sandoval (420.5)
2B - Ian Kinsler (462.5)
SS - Hanley Ramirez (509.0)
3B - Ryan Zimmerman (487.5)
MI - Stephen Drew (334.0)
CI - Ian Stewart (319.5)
OF - Matt Holliday (487.5)
OF - Nate McLouth (345.5)
OF - Vernon Wells (365.0)
DH - Miguel Cabrera (470.0)
Util - Billy Butler (384.5)
Util - Jeff Francoeur (315.0)

SP - Jon Lester (497.8)
SP - Zach Duke (288.3)
SP - Ervin Santana (155.8)
SP - Carlos Zambrano (267.7)
SP - Tommy Hanson (249.6)
RP - Jonathan Papelbon (336.1)
RP - Joakim Soria (249.2)
RP - Brian Fuentes (284.0)

BN - Geovany Soto (171.5)
BN - Travis Snider (95.5)
BN - Angel Pagan (206.0)
BN - Garrett Atkins (194.0)

BN - Fausto Carmona (55.8)
BN - Aaron Laffey (178.4)
BN - Tim Redding (85.0)

DL - Adam Jones (376.5)
MIN - Jayson Heyward (0.0)

So, I'm kind of at a loss. I have pretty much the deepest group of young guys, but I can only keep 5. I know I'm keeping Hanley and Kinsler, I have to decide on the last 3 spots. It's between Holliday, Zimmerman, Cabrera, and Lester. Anyone care to help me out here?

That's what I had thought before. But Lester's just been on a tear in the second half, and I had drafted him expecting this all year. Still, he's probably the one I'll most likely get a chance to draft next year.

I would go
Hanley Ramirez
Ian Kinsler
Miguel Cabrera
Ryan Zimmermann
Jon Lester

Zimmerman is in the top 5 of 3B and after the top 5 it takes a deep drop in talent same as 2B,, Cabrera is a top 10 player period. I didn't choose Matt Holliday, beacause a.) Outfield talent is very deep and b.) manny Ramirez, pulled the same stunt in LA last season and has been more back to normal production this season (.290-.300 avg 25hrs), plus he hasn't been stealing bases in STL lately which was a big part of his value as well.

help with mine?

I wouldn't necessarily say so. He was only projected at 15 SBs in my league, and he's at 14 now, and he's still hitting .316. I may have to let Lester go based on name value. I think Holliday is 100% sure to be the top pick if I let him go into the draft, while I could possibly get Lester in the mid-to-late first.

Hanley, Kinsler, and MCab are no-brainers. I put more stock in hitters than pitchers, so I'll keep Holliday and Zimmerman as well. I can't imagine selecting Lester before any of those guys in a draft next year, anyway.

Help with mine? viewtopic.php?f=26&t=397135
