This is a 8 team roto league. I need to choose 4 keepers for next year. The catch is, all keepers stay at last year's auctioned value. All other players get auctioned again with all 8 teams starting with a $250 salary.
Questions: 1.) Do I keep my higher priced infielders (Fielder, ARod, Utley), which solidifies my infield but consumes 33% of my salary? 2.) I think the best bang for the buck guys on my team are Youkillis, Granderson, King Felix, and Josh Johnson. Would it be foolish to consider any of those as keepers? 3.) Which 4 would you keep?
My league has additional hitting categories (triples, hits, walks) and pitching categories (complete games). Please help, I will help in return.
C - Ryan Doumit ($5) 1B - Prince Fielder ($27) 2B - Chase Utley ($29) 3B - Alex Rodriguez ($27) SS - Steven Drew ($2) OF - Carlos Lee ($20) OF - Curtis Granderson ($15) OF - Alexi Rameriz ($7) UT - Kevin Youkillis ($11) UT - Carlos Pena ($3)
BN - Jermaine Dye ($9) BN - Jose Lopez ($1) BN - Miguel Montero ($10)
SP - Felix Hernandez ($7) SP - Yovani Gallardo ($3) SP - Josh Johnson ($3) SP - John Lackey ($5) SP - Clayton Kershaw ($1) SP - Tommy Hanson ($10) RP - Trevor Hoffman ($3) RP - Joakim Soria ($8) RP - Jim Johnson ($10) RP - JP Howell ($10)
SP - Felix Hernandez ($7) SP - Yovani Gallardo ($3) SP - Clayton Kershaw ($1) 2B - Chase Utley ($29) OR 3B - Alex Rodriguez ($27)
It's odd to keep three SP, but all Felix, Gallardo, and Kershaw are steals. I'd say Kershaw is a must for just a buck and so is Felix. If you want to keep two of your infielders, you have Fielder, Utley, and A-Rod for fairly reasonable prices, but if you decide to keep three pitchers for a bargain, I'd load up at either scarce position with Utley or A-Rod.
1B - Prince Fielder ($27) 2B - Chase Utley ($29) 3B - Alex Rodriguez ($27) SP - Felix/Kershaw
Judging by the prices on your pitchers, and the fact that you only keep 4 players in an 8 team league, it seems like pitchers are a dime a dozen, keep the bats that you have to have, and pick one of Felix / Kershaw.

I have an idea, why not trade Utley and Kemp for a cheap top end OF.
Then you could keep Jose Lopez who isn't far off him and is a steal at 1. Alexei Ramirez is also a steal at that price. So are half your pitchers. Thats insane.

I hate you only keep 4.
The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!
This was our leagues first try at auctions and everybody was spending money like crazy. I fortunately had a elaborate pricing model in Excel that I found on this forum and was able to not over spend. I waited for the first half hour and let everybody over pay for their players. I was proposing closers and people were paying $15+. Toward the end of the auction, I had all the money and was scooping up the pitchers left over.
These are some of the over priced purchases that happened on auction day. Pujols went for $51 Lincecum $38 CC Sabathia $38 Halladay $35 Santana $36 Jose Reyes $51 David Wright $39 Sizemore $37 Hanley Ramirez $53 Ryan Howard $31 Papelbon $22 KRod $21 Atkins $29
Also, I would love to trade two stud players to get a cheap outfielder but the trade deadline is over. I guess I could do a trade this offseason though.
As much of a steal as those pitchers are at that value, Fielder at $27, Utley at $29, and Arod at $27 are all under market value too and are very much affordable. I move on with those three for sure because like others said, it's so much harder to build an elite starting lineup than it is an elite pitching staff. Honestly, Felix at 7, Gallardo at 3, JJ at 3, Lackey at 5, and Kershaw at 1 are all excellent values. I think I take Kershaw at 1, simply because he's the least expensive and has a very high ceiling.
Does anybody think my final Keeper should not be a pitcher? If the concensus is that hitters are harder to replace than pitchers, shouldn't my last keeper be Youkillis or Granderson?

Yes, but the value of Youkillis ($11) or Granderson ($15) does not compare to the rock-low prices of your potential keeper-worthy starting pitchers. Since you are going to commit a third of your salary for 3 keepers, it's worth it to protect a potential ace with minimal investment, ie, Kershaw at 1, or Gallardo/JJ at 3.
