Mar 17 Second baseman Jerry Hairston, sidelined since March 4 with a broken finger, won't need surgery. Hairston visited a hand specialist Monday, who confirmed that the fractured knuckle of Hairston's right ring finger is healing properly. However, Hairston's wounded digit will remain in a splint until March 26, when he'll be examined again. "The doctor said it looks very good," O's VP Jim Beattie told the Baltimore Sun. "We're still leaning toward no surgery, but the finger has to be immobile for another 10 days. We're probably still looking at the middle to end of April before he can play." Hairston had been hoping to be available by Opening Day, which would be exactly one month after the injury occurred. "I'm not going to rule it out," he said. "But that's cutting it kind of close."
