The best thing to do is try some of the wines that other people with similar taste as you recommend. From there you can weed out what you like and what you don't like. Try some wines that are on sale at the supermarket also. There are a lot of hidden gems.
Keep in mind that expensive wine doesn't necessarily mean it's better. Most of the stuff I buy is under $20 (on sale) and they taste just as good if not better than $100+ wines I've had. Wine from the same winery can vary based on the region, harvest, batch, year, how it was stored, etc.

Reislings go with chinese food. I was skeptical at first, but pleasantly surprised.
i don't know much about wines, but i can't tell much difference between really cheap wine (sub $7) and more expensive ones. i prefer red wine myself, white is too acidic for my tastes.
try 2 buck chucks, and try giving them to people without telling them. i've seen some people quite shocked they enjoyed a $2 wine.
There really is no better wine for the money. Only available at Trader Joe's.
Real name: Charles Shaw. I suggest the Merlot but the Cab is nice too. Oh, and the Shiraz, that's got me drunk on a budget many a' time.
Two Buck Chuck is complete ghetto.
Because something is cheap it must be ghetto?
I scoff at that at that elitist mentality.
Thunderbird, Night Train, Cisco...there's your ghetto buffet. Two Buck Chuck is a decent tasting wine. I bet if we gave you a blind taste test you'd not be able to tell it apart from similar $20-$30 bottles.

No Two Buck Chuck is ghetto because it is disgusting. I would never drink that crap ever again.
