I love the White Stripes, but I haven't really dug any of his side projects.

Yeah I never understood the Jack White hype either. I remember when seven nation army was out there was a radio station that had a "greatest guitarist ever" poll and he was near the top. The next time I heard Seven Nation Army I listened to the guitar to see what the attraction was and the only thing I noticed is that that entire song consists of only one single riff (except for the one-note bridge that connects the main riff to itself). So I guess he's awesome because he can make hit songs using only one riff?? I don't know, I'm still trying to figure it out myself. :-S

It's more about mainstream America trying to anoint somebody as the heir apparent to the greats. Funny thing is, most people are stupid enough to fall for it and actually believe that a guy like White belongs in the conversation as one of the best guitarists of all time.

Edit: It's much like when the media or whoever anoints somebody as the "next Jordan". There's a tendency to want to convince yourself that you are seeing one of the best or greatest.

I could almost give him a "Creative" point or two. But really it's not that creative. I mean that style has been done before hasn't it?

Anyways they guy is not a great guitarist. Maybe he's a good guitarist but you can't tell because he uses so much frickin feedback and distortion

I think he's a good guitarist in the fact that he used a raw genre, distortion and feedback to create pop/ indie rock songs with only a guitar and drumset. It's pretty genius actually even if I'm not a huge fan. I liked White Blood Cells a lot and even De Stijl but they kind of went more into blues on the next records which abandoned what made them so great... but I guess it made them superstars. I haven't liked the side projects, Dead Weather is ok though.

I guess he reminds me of Tool's guitarist. He does something new and different with the guitar which is cool. However, it's not like 90% of guitarists who have played for more then 4 years couldn't do that.

He's not technincally talentedd but he writes better songs than many technically talented players.

Yeah, that's the thing, most guitarists today who are considered "elite" play really crappy music.

The term is also used to describe existing bands whose members achieved individual fame after the band's founding,
