Phils righty hit in the eye while playing catch with son

Phillies right-hander Brett Myers' scheduled rehab start for Advanced Class A Clearwater was scratched Saturday afternoon after he was hit in the eye by a baseball while playing catch with his 4-year-old son Kolt.

According to delawareonline.com, the Phillies had not yet revealed the extent of the injury, but a team spokesman said that more details would be available later in the day from Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

Myers, on the disabled list since undergoing right hip surgery on June 5, had been on a surprisingly rapid return schedule and had been slated to pitch one inning for the Threshers in their game against the Tampa Yankees in his return to the mound.

Myers, who will be eligible for free agency following the 2009 season, has been working hard to get back on the mound before season's end. He went 4-3 with a 4.66 ERA in 10 starts before being shut down.

That story changed approximately 30 minutes before the Phillies were set to take on the Braves at Turner Field, when a team official informed reporters of a revised status report on Myers' injury.

Apparently, Myers later informed Amaro that the injury, in fact, was sustained when he slipped while getting out of his pickup truck on Friday night. Myers landed on his face, causing considerable swelling.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies say right-hander Brett Myers (FSY) has changed his description of how he sustained an injury that forced him to miss his first scheduled rehab start.

The Phillies originally said Saturday that Myers injured an eye while playing catch with his 4-year-old son.

Later in the day, Phillies spokesman Kevin Gregg said Myers told general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. he actually slipped while getting out of his truck and hit his face on Friday night.

"Brett told us one story and then he told us this story," Gregg said. "We were misinformed by Brett.

"He slipped getting out of his truck last night, hit his face and suffered significant swelling around his eye."

Gregg said each version of the injury was reported by Myers to Amaro.

Myers, out since May 28 due to a torn labrum in his right hip, was scheduled to pitch one inning for Class-A Clearwater on Saturday night.

There was no immediate update on the severity of the eye injury. Gregg said Myers was icing the injury on Saturday and will be examined by Phillies medical staff in Clearwater on Sunday.

he probably got beaten up by his wife. probably took one to the eye.

There's no doubt he was part of that bar fight. Someone made a comment pertaining to his wife - and he flipped. I just find it interesting that he brought his son into it. The last thing that family needed was another domestic entanglement.
