OF Gamble at the Deadline???

Postby JTWood » Sat Aug 15, 2009 11:34 am

Our waiver deadline is Monday at noon Eastern, and I think I need some OF help for the playoffs.

This is my current roster of OFers:

Ibanez
Vlad
Willingham
Ludwick
Godzirra

I just feel like there's too much risk with this OF in the post season, particularly with Ibanez looking like he's about to come back to earth hard. I'd like to add a hot bat at the deadline. My drop would be Helton, since Godzirra can play first for me if needed. There really aren't a lot of good options for me out there. Here's a list of the hottest free agents in my league over the last couple of weeks (looking for OPS here... Net SBs are nice, but not necessary):

Rajai Davis
Vill Venable
Gerrardo Parra
Trent Oeltjen

Mike Cameron is also out there, not that he's been particularly hot or anything. Do you think I should take a gamble or just hope that one or more of my guys can get hot? My pitching is ridiculously good and very deep, and my infield is stable (Youk, Utley, Tejada, Reynolds). So it's not like I absolutely need to make this move. I'm just thinking that Helton won't factor, so I might as well take a good gamble on someone. What do you think? Any names stand out to you?

Oeltjen looks to be a good gamble and he has been killing it, but ranking them I would go

Oeltjen
Parra (most likely to become 4th OF when Upton comes back)
Davis (as long as he hits)
Venable (Padres OF is crowded)

help with mine?

You need speed, and Davis is getting full time ABs and is a SB machine. He's the easy choice here over guys that are "flavor of the week" types. Not to mention he draws walks.

Thx. I don't think you want me replying to your keeper thread. I only play H2H, points, which is like the exact opposite of roto, cats. :-b

Actually, I play in a points league with sabr valuation of events (plus R, RBI). SBs really don't help unless the guy is like a consistent, 70% base stealer. It's a safer gamble to go with OPS guys that can drive in runs.

Davis might just be the best guy anyway. He's walking and stealing more and more every day, isn't he?

Yeah, pretty much. He has a solid OBP and plays every day. Plus he's succeeded at the MLB level for stretches before. The rest of the guys listed are newbies who are on hot streaks.
