Because Mathis is a better defensive catcher and also because Vlad is back from the DL and will be eating up Nap's DH opportunities.

I had been enjoying his production for the last two weeks, didn't even think they could take him out with him being on fire as he was

Scioscia comes from the "you need to handle pitchers, just like I did" school of catching. Mathis at a .198 lifetime avg is a pretty extreme example. I'm not sure about this philosophy, but you can't argue with the results.

I haven't really seen him play that much but Napoli may not reach a certain level in catching ability, and I don't think Scioscia can take it any more. Napoli was playing most of his recent games at DH, but now Vlads back, kind of.

'Zackly. I picked Napoli up from the WW when Vlad went down because it meant he would be DHing a lot. Definitely paid off ... ;-D

His value strictly as a C isn't so hot. He puts out, but those off-days are aggravating. And he seems to thrive with regular playing time. I have to think about dropping him ... maybe Montero? :-?

Any thoughts on how soon it'll be before Vlad starts playing the field again? If he can get back to OF 3-4 days a week that should open things up for Napoli again at DH with catch 1-2 days a week.

I read that Vlad would be strictly DH for the rest of the season.
