My league's trading deadline is approaching and I have a chance to acquire either Utley or Braun in exchange for pitching, which I have to deal.
Position doesn't matter because whichever one I get will go into the Utility position, and I need help in batting pretty much across the board. Which one should I choose?
assuming you are paying the same price for each player I would take Utley. Both players post comparable stats but I find Utley to be a more consistent player and is more valuable in the instance of an injury down the stretch. You may find that the price for Utley is higher in which case you might be better off just taking the cheaper of the two
Virtually the same player in every category. Personally I think Braun is the more potent offensive player. I guess it comes down to which owner you can strike a better deal with. Who were you thinking about trading?
I assume you are giving up saves to pick up the slack in multiple offensive categories. I would say if you could get one of those two guys then its a smart decision. Are any of the following players available in your league? Josh Willingham, Kendry Morales, or Jason Frasor. These would be cheap options to pick up power numbers and a short term closer (assuming Scott Downs returns).

I'd be very, VERY surprised if either of those 2 are available, and if they are you need a more competitive league, i mean we are talking about a guy in Morales who has 23 Bombs, 69 RBI and a .300 average you don't get to just pick that up off the WW in almost all leagues... and Willingham, most pounced on him a week or two or three ago as hes hit 8 HR and drove in 23 while batting .330 over the last month...
that being said this is the way i look at it...
like everyone else has said assuming your paying the same for both i think Utley is your way to go... Braun carries the big name, but Utley is the better talent simply because of the position he plays... its a hell of alot harder to get a top 2B then a compareable in stats OFer... plus Utley IMO bats in the much stronger Philly lineup, i mean everyone talks about the great Brewer lineup, heck outside of Braun and Fielder there isn't much at all, Hardy blows, Hart has sucked it up all year and is now on the DL, the rotating door at 2B isn't that great of an option between Lopez and Counsell and Casey McGee just swings for the fences and provides no help for Braun as he bats behind him and pitchers aren't scared to throw to him so they tend to pitch around Braun more... Cameron is a decent option, but again bats behind Braun, Fielder is the only real protection Braun has in that lineup...
now on the other hand you look at Philly's lineup... it doesn't get much better then having JRoll ahead of you to and Francisco who i don't think is that bad of #2 bat at all, alot of people underplay his potential but he could be a sweet addition to the top side of that lineup, so thats 2 guys ahead of Utley that i would much rather have then Lopez and Counsell, then you look behind utley and hes got as much protection as anyone in baseabll, i mean Howard, Ibanez, Werth all the way down to Pedro Feliz whos name has dropped over the past couple years but is still batting .290 up to this point in the season as a #7/#8 hitter... that lineup is power packed, to top it off i think Utley year in year out will compare to Brauns power numbers, but have a higher average and carry more SB then Braun not to mention the covetted 2B position tag he carries with him...

On the contrary I am in a very competitive 10-team league where I picked up Willingham a few weeks ago and just got Morales a week ago. Not to mention players such as Beckham and Jason Kubel just got picked up since there has been so much young talent this year.
that being said this is the way i look at it...

hope this helps out!
Also, keep in mind he said that position doesn't matter, he is looking strictly for who will put up the better offensive numbers for the remainder of the season, where I see Ryan Braun as being the more consistent hitter this year.

#1 that in itself tells me its a smaller or not very deep benches if Berkman was a FA, and exactly what young talent would you take over Morales, Berkman and Kubels numbers right now?? thats crazy, i could see Willingham simply because hes had hot streaks in the past and then fizzeled out, but Berkman? and Kubel has been scorching the ball ALL season its not like this is just a last week or 2 fling going on...
#2 Position matters no matter what YOU need on your roster, this is basically just a gimme player as he has said that the player will just play at UTIL, well it does matter when down the road you either decide to trade that player or trade a player off the roster that was penciled in at that particular position... id really, really like to see a roster to see who you would be starting OVER Utley at 2B... like i say no matter what YOU will use them as player still carry more value at depleted positions such as 2B over the ubundent OF positions, and overall Utley is the strong pick stat wise IMO, better average, more SB, potentially more runs and as of now more HR... Power numbers i say are about as equal as any other 2 players between Utley and Braun (HR/RBI numbers i mean) so its basically a wash there, but AGAIN Utley carries more value A. because he will swipe more bags, B. because he will bat for a higher average, C. he will most likely score more runs and D. because his postion shoots his value through the roof, i mean we are talking about the Best 2B in the game right now, Braun is up there but there are potentially some other OFer who could be ranked higher and deservedly so...
i don't like when people say 'position means nothing because they will be played at UTIL' thats BULL... positions matter even if you use them everyday at UTIL because other people may be interested in that particular player, injuries happen if his starting 2B goes down (not wishing bad on you btw) then where does he turn? its a hell of alot easier to replace an OFer with compareable stats then it is a 2B, so when you both say that position doesn't matter you need to re-evaluate the situation because position scarcity plays a MAJOR role in the value of players...
again please post your roster to see exactly what kind of value you are carrying at particular positions... and i rest...
