Jesus Montero out for the year

Yankees prospect Jesus Montero will miss the rest of the year with a fractured middle finger on his left hand.
We've argued that the Yankees should have started developing Montero as a first baseman/designated hitter already. Fortunately, this isn't a major injury, but it did come while he was catching and it shows the dangers of leaving him behind the plate when it's doubtful that he'll ever be a major league-quality catcher. He should be ready to play in the Arizona Fall League if the Yankees want him to.

It's really disappointing. He was on some people's maps after lighting up lower levels last year, but he really became a top prospect after doing so well in AA. I wonder if he'll play in the AFL or winter leagues.

I was surprised that he wasn't traded. I expected him to be moved since most don't think he can stay behind the dish and they have no room for him at 1B. I figured they could move him in a deal for Halladay or Holliday.

This definitely hurts but it is only a finger which means that the healing process should be fairly straight forward.

Yeah, I think this is a strict end time and easy healing process so he'll should not lose anything. Something else to remember is that Montero could be the DH for the Yankees with part-time duty at 1B and C. Mastui is a free agent after this season.
