trading for Joba (WHIR)

Postby etex211 » Sun Aug 02, 2009 2:43 pm

Our league: 18 team 5x5 roto, 2 rounds of 2 week head to head playoffs in September. Players can be kept a maximum of 3 years.

I am currently leading my division with a ~12 point lead. I think that I am fairly safe with that lead, but I don't want to be too content with it. My biggest weakness is pitching, so I am looking to improve that.

Here is my current pitching staff:

Greinke
Tommy Hunter
Nathan (just traded Bergeson for him this week)
Stammen
Swarzak
Verlander
Brian Wilson
Wolf
Zambrano

With the trade for Nathan, I feel good about my two closers. I also feel good about Verlander, Greinke, Zambrano, and Wolf. I am very nervous about Hunter, Swarzak, and Stammen, especially after Hunter's disaster last night. I will probably dump Stammen for something from the waiver wire with tomorrow's moves. That leaves me with Hunter and Swarzak to worry about.

One of the other owners is out of contention and is offering all of his players that can't be kept for next year. In exchange, he wants some decent keepers. The players that he is offering are Butler, Orlando Cabrera, Corey Hart, Joba, McDougal, Matt Palmer, and Peavy.

From this list, Joba is the guy that can help me most. The other guy said that he likes Swarzak. I don't think our league's executive committee will approve Joba for Swarzak straight up, so I will probably need to sweeten the deal to include a shortstop swap: Joba and Orlando Cabrera for Swarzak and Asdrubal Cabrera. I am okay with giving up a little bit on offense if it can improve my pitching. The dropoff from Asdrubal to Orlando shouldn't be the great for the next 8 weeks.

Here are my questions:

1. There are reports that the Yankees are going to start limiting Joba's innings for the remainder of this season. His next start has already been pushed back. This is the thing that makes me the most nervous about doing this deal. Does anybody have any insight into this?

2. Does the 2 for 2 deal above look fair to both sides?

Thanks for any and all replies. WHIR, please leave a link.

BTW, I've put feelers out to other owners about trades for Johan Santana and AJ Burnett. I can probably do only one more deal for a pitcher, so I need to also consider scrapping the Joba deal and focusing on these other guys. Of course, the price for either of these guys would be higher.
