Big Trades.. please evaluate.. WHIR WHIR

Postby uncfan1986 » Sat Aug 01, 2009 12:27 pm

Ok, so I'm in an NL-only Roto league and I currently sit in 4th place out of 13 (20 points behind 1st, 2nd and 3rd.. who are all tied). 3 places are paid and it is very top-heavy as 1st place gets substantially more than 2nd and 3rd. We selected our teams with an auction system and our keeper system is based off of salary. You can select as many keepers as you want but the salary increases by $3 for the first keeper, $4 for the second keeper, etc (We have $260 to fill 29 spots, 23 of which are starters). Most marquee players have salaries that are too high to keep so only prospects picked up as fillers at the end of the auction really have any chance of being kept. On my team, I had these guys as viable keepers: A. McCutchen, C. Gonzalez (COL), J. Sanchez, P. Alvarez and F. Morales. I'm looking to make a run at the money if not 1st place so I'm dealing off my keepers. I believe my biggest need is offense because I'm stuck in the pack in BAs, HRs, RBIs and Rs and I feel a few good hitters could bust me out of the pack and near the top. I'm way down in ERA and WHIP but I believe that some quality relievers could help me with this the rest of the way. I'm stuck in the pack on Ws and I'm in a small group in the middle of Saves. My Ks and SBs rank in the top 3. I've just made 3 deals to put me over the top and they should all go through even with a vote. Heres what I did.. please comment on any or all trades. As a sidenote, I don't have enough FAAB to land any of the big names from the trade deadline.

I got:
Mark DeRosa
Adam Dunn
Brian Wilson

Gave up (I accepted this before Johnson got dealt):
Nick Johnson
Delwyn Young
Tim Lincecum

This deal definitely helps my offense but I may have given up too much now that Young is a full-timer and Johnson got dealt. Not sure.. This deal was made with one of the teams above me who is also above me in HRs, RBIs and Rs. So basically, I not only beef up these stats but he loses some here, making it easier to gain on him I felt. I lead him in Ks and he has me in ERA, WHIP and Ws so dealing Lincecum probably doesn't change that for me. I couldn't catch him in those with Lincy alone so that was the point of the deals below.

I got:
Matt Kemp
Rafeal Soriano
Jeremy Affeldt

Gave up:
Matt Capps
Andrew McCutchen
Laynce Nix

I didn't see anyway this deal wasn't good for me. I lose my best keeper in McCutchen but Kemp and Soriano are huge and Affeldt will help with ERA and WHIP. Capps was killing my ERA. Soriano also would be a good keeper if he closes again next season.

I got:
Chad Qualls
Javier Vazquez
Freddy Sanchez

Gave up:
Franklin Morales
Jonathan Sanchez
Carlos Gonzalez
Jeff Baker

More saves.. could allow me to take over the lead here. Replaces some of the Ks and Ws from Lincecum and gives me another MI bat. It hurts to lose Gonzalez, Sanchez and Morales because they could all be kept but they won't do much for me this season and I want to win now.

So.. heres my lineup before and after:
C - M. Montero - Same
C - B. Schneider - Same
1B - A. Pujols - Same
2B - E. Bonifacio - F. Sanchez
3B - R. Zimmerman - Same
SS - C. Barmes - Same
MI - J. Lugo - Same
CI - N. Johnson - M. DeRosa
OF - R. Braun - Same
OF - J. Fox - Same
OF - C. Gonzalez - A. Dunn
OF - A. McCutchen - M. Kemp
OF - D. Young - F. Tatis
U - P. Feliz - Same
P - J.A. Happ - Same
P - M. Capps - R. Soriano
P - T. Lincecum - J. Vazquez
P - J. Niese - Same
P - J. Sanchez - C. Qualls
P - J. Lannan - Same
P - C. Marmol - Same
P - J. Hammel - Same
P - L. Ayala - B. Wilson

I also have Affeldt to slot for Hammel or Marmol if I chose. Maybe even Lannan or Happ if I play matchups. Lineups are set weekly. Let me know if you think this was good or bad on the whole and individually. Will help on anything and everything for your input. I know its a lot of info but I felt it was needed.

The first deal I don't like, the other two are solid trades for you. I don't think you got enough back for Lincecum.

Help with mine?

Absolutely love deals 2 and 3. I don't like dealing lincecum in the first deal. you got 3 solid options, but nothing great.

Agree with the previous posters. I think you did well with deals 2 and 3. You didn't get raped in the first one, but I think you could have gotten a better bat than Dunn given you gave up one of the top 3 SPs in the game.
