6:09pm: Blair also hears that the Jays will send about $4MM to the Reds.

4:50pm: Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star reports that the Jays will pay all of Rolen's 2009 salary, nearly $4MM. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report that an undisclosed amount of cash is changing hands.

the Jays are paying whatever Rolen is due for the rest of this season.
and then additional cash? or is the cash the $4 MIL Rolen is due for this season?

if Encarnacion is better suited as a DH going forward the Jays should make another move, i guess would be in the offseason now. they could use Encarnacion at DH, Travis Snider in LF, Adam Lind at 1B, and then they would need someone new for 3B. maybe they could swap Lyle Overbay somewhere for a 3B?
either that or they are going to need a free agent 3B..
Adrian Beltre SEA
Hank Blalock TEX
Geoff Blum HOU
Joe Crede MIN
Pedro Feliz PHI (option)
Chone Figgins LAA
Troy Glaus STL
Mike Lamb MIL
Melvin Mora BAL (option)

im still curious as to why the Reds wanted to do the deal.

This season only. They still save a lot of money next year.

Yes...I like the idea of acquiring a 3B somehow. Imagine Troy Glaus came back...he would be a pretty good fit, though I know he hated the turf.

If they had a reason, it isn't a good one.

Maybe I can shed a little light on this. Walt Jocketty (Reds GM) has a history with Scott Rolen as the Cardinals GM during his tenure there. Rolen's been rumored to come to Cincy before, so my guess is that Jocketty has a man-crush on him.

Reading between the line, its been obvious the Reds leadership have been fed up with EE for the better part of the last two years. He still has a lot of potential, but he's flat out lazy. I'm pretty sure they've been looking to get rid of him for a while.

The addition of the two pitchers makes this a pretty bad trade for Cincy. I think they feel they can sign Rolen long-term (and that he still has some productive years left in him).

One other thing, don't knock Edwin's defense too much. He makes a number of pretty bad looking errors, but he can look awfully good quite often. If you haven't watched him that much, you might be surprised when you do.

Can Cito set EE straight though? I do not know much about him as a manager. He has to be better than Dusty though, right?

The question is whether Brian Butterfield, the bench coach, can help his defense. He seems to be able to hit well enough already as it is.
