They had been looking at VMart for a while, hard to think they didn't consider it a possibility that they'd eventually land him. Either way they got LaRoche for basically nothing, so I guess why not do it.
I'm assuming V-Mart was Plan A and LaRoche was Plan B.
It just so happens that they pulled the trigger on B first.
If you remember Tampa Bay were also strongly after V-Mart. When Boston snagged V-Mart they decided that they didn't need LaRoche's bat and opted for Kotchman's defense and longer cost-controlled-ness.
Theo himself said something like that.

But you do?
Did I say I did?
No I didn't.
I'm part of "none of you".
It's just funny how a lot of people on here run their mouth like they know everything, when half the time they probably never played an inning of baseball in their lives. All I said was it seemed to me like LaRoche was going to be traded again, and then he was. It doesn't mean I'm trying to pretend like I know what Theo Epstein and the Red Sox were thinking the whole way. Gimme a break.

Sorry I guess this statement:
Guess they did get him to trade.
that you made me think you where saying that's why they got him.
And I thought that my opinion was very cut and dry and plain.
Still don't think that was the original plan with him though. I think once they realized they had V-Mart they didn't need him as much and Kotchman fits into their team much better
I was just expressing my thoughts on it and never claimed to be saying what they where really planning on doing all along. Even though I was accused of doing that.
