Matt Holliday Trade thread

The Cardinals are close to acquiring Matt Holliday from the Cardinals for Brett Wallace and two other players, according to ESPN.com's Tim Kurkjian.

Outfielder Shane Peterson and righty Clayton Mortensen are also headed to Oakland if the deal goes through.

It's unclear who would pay Holliday the remaining $6MM on his contract should the teams complete a trade.

Not sure how I feel about this...seems like they could have got more out of Wallace. Hopefully it pans out, and isn't another Mulder-Haren fiasco.

I've liked Mortensen in the past, and Wallace is the 3B of our dreams - he's even a fatty just the way we like it.



Mortensen pitched 180 innings in '07, so he probably felt the effects of that in '08 and we're kind of buying low on him IMO.

From what I've heard, Wallace is not a good defensive player. Better suited for 1B/DH, which is why the Cards are more willing to trade him.

Yes, but he has a pulse, which is more then you can say for any 3B we have at any level.

Wallace will end up at 1st/DH. The Cards need a 3b, too, and would be more reluctant to give him up if they really felt he'd stick at 3rd.

Mortensen is the wild card but many feel he'll end up a 5th starter/bull pen guy. Not a huge deal there in my eyes.
