No replacement for practice.
Backing off on your swing is a start, but 50% is crazy. That would probably give you a swing speed of about 40-45 mph which is not adequate to hit a ball with any expectation of a good result. Most of the time just easing off a bit, 5-10%, will usually help you.
You need to practice. Just practice swinging in your back yard. Hit whiffle balls. Go to your nearest school and use their playground fields, football fields (of course when school is not in session), and practice with your short irons or wedges. Where there is a will, there is a way. Practicing with your shorter clubs will give you better tempo and improve your confidence.
Also, sign up for some group lessons. Group lessons are much less expensive and will help you improve your game. Work on your short game (which is something the average golfer rarely does). When my son's were young (4-6 years old), I would take them to our local club and practice chipping and putting for 1-2 hours about 3 times a week. Within a couple of years they had short games better than most of the guys I played with.
Golf tips in this forum will not improve your game. Practice will improve it.
Good luck and happy golfing
