Legalizing Marijuana being discussed in CA

Postby knapplc » Thu Jul 16, 2009 9:56 am

They have a $26 billion budget shortfall and they think this might help.

SAN FRANCISCO – A bill to tax and regulate marijuana in California like alcohol would generate nearly $1.4 billion in revenue for the cash-strapped state, according to an official analysis released Wednesday by tax officials.

The State Board of Equalization report estimates marijuana retail sales would bring $990 million from a $50-per-ounce fee and $392 million in sales taxes.

The bill introduced by San Francisco Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano in February would allow adults 21 and older to legally possess, grow and sell marijuana.

Ammiano has promoted the bill as a way to help bridge the state's $26.3 billion budget shortfall.

"It defies reason to propose closing parks and eliminating vital services for the poor while this potential revenue is available," Ammiano said in a statement.

The way the bill is written, the state could not begin collecting taxes until the federal government legalizes marijuana. A spokesman says Ammiano plans to amend the bill to remove that provision.

:-S

So we're to the point as a society where when faced with the choice to either close some parks or legalize drugs, the answer becomes obvious... in the other direction.

But why stop there? Let's legalize all drugs so we can remove the DEA, legalize and tax prostitution - we can even encourage poaching! ;-7

Here we go....

Anyway pot isn't "drugs" like heroin or crack or meth, it never should have been illegal in the first place.

Make it legal, tax it like tobacco and alcohol and lottery, build better parks, schools, and roads....everybody wins.

I agree with all of this except the poaching part.

I still don't fully understand how this would work with law enforcement. Would local agencies just ignore federal law? Would they have the option to enforce federal law if they wanted to, but not have to?

Believe me, I thought about not posting this because I knew where the discussion would go. But if we all keep our heads it's a decent discussion, or we could just search up the other ten threads where we talked about pro/con legal pot, and simply discuss California's money problems. But the thread will have a life of its own, I'm sure.

I'm pretty sure there would be a legal battle over this before it went into effect. Likely the reality is that CA will be recovered from their financial difficulties before this was sorted out legally.
