the reason that he's not an all-star is that he plays 1B and although his stats are great they don't standout vs the other AL 1B in the All-Star team or even several that weren't all-stars. Personally I would have taken him over Pena but Pena isn't having a bad season.
Can you really make a case that he was slighted when you compare his stats vs Youkilis, Morneau, Branyan, Tex, Pena with guys like Konerko and Morales also putting up good numbers. That's 8 guys with very good offensive numbers for 3 spots (possibly 4). Someone is going to be snubbed.

This year (pre-Allstar), I would rank AL 1B accordingly...
It is tough to do, but you really have to ignore stats such as runs and ribbies because those aren't really individual stats for the player. Such stats depend on the team's performance.

Well, your rankings are just the AL 1B sorted by OPS (which is reasonable), except that you switched Cabrera and Branyan. This kind of illustrates the point - Youkilis and Morneau were no brainers, Teixeira was voted in by the fans. You can certainly make an argument that Cabrera deserved to go over Pena, but based strictly on OPS, Branyan deserved it even more.

Exactly. And the separation between the 1st and 6th players on the list is not that much. 10 people could make 10 different rankings. it's not like MCab got snubbed for Billy Butler or something.

Definitely not which is the problem here. First base is a flooded position of power hitters. Maybe if Cabrera played the hot corner again, he would be in the allstar game.
