10 team league, H2H. Categories are R, 2B, HR, RBI, BB, AVG, SB, W, L, SV, K, ERA, WHIP.
My team:
C - Doumit 1B - Howard 2B - Figgins SS - Drew 3B - ARod OF - J. Upton, Markakis, Hamilton Util - Votto B - Ethier, Victorino, Sanchez, Wieters SP - Oswalt, Shields, Vasquez, Scherzer, Smoltz, Nolasco RP - Soria, Soriano DL - Quentin
I just don't know what to do any more. My team was struggling in last place for about a month. Had 2 good weeks in a row, beating the top 2 teams in the league (at the time). Had a 7-4 lead going into yesterday, and my team went back to sh**ing the bed like they've been doing most of the season on Sundays, ended up losing 5-7. I'm now only 1 game out of last place, almost 30 games back from 1st. Obviously at this point I'm just concerned with getting in the playoffs, but I need to start closing the gap for those last playoff spots pretty soon.
Looking at my team on paper, I think it's pretty damn good. I obviously struggled with injuries much of the year (Hamilton, Quentin, ARod, in addition to Slowey and a couple others I've since dropped). I've made plenty of moves to improve the team....it's not even recognizable from the one I started the year with. Recently traded Abreu away for Figgins. Traded away Beckett for Oswalt and Markakis about a month ago. Picked up Votto off waivers (don't ask, the owner has rightfully been laughed at for dropping him). Picked Nolasco back up after his awful start. Just picked up Doumit, who was somehow just sitting out there a week ago.
Anyways, I think I've got a pretty good squad. I think my starting pitching could be better. Maybe could use an upgrade at SS, though Drew's been playing pretty well of late. The obvious thing to do here is trade away some of my ridiculous OF depth. If Quentin returns, I'll have 3 guys on my bench that could be starting on a lot of teams. So who do I trade away (and what should I look to get in return)? I've been leaning towards dealing Victorino. He's been super hot lately and his value's probably at a peak. I'd be selling pretty low on Hamilton, Markakis, and Quentin IMO. JUp has been one of my lone consistent studs this year and appears to be for real.....but I imagine I could probably get a good return for him right now. Do I try and deal off Howard since I've got a great backup in Votto? I'd like to do a 2-for-1 deal where I'm giving 2, so I've got the room to pick Slowey back up once he's healthy.
Or am I better off just sitting tight, holding onto my OF depth and hope that a desperate owner approaches me with an offer before the deadline?

Try dealing an OF for a stud SP which is what you need. The rest of your team looks fine. Just play what you have and try to reclaim a few spots. You have the talent. A lot of your team has been hurt.

Agreed see if you can package a #2 or #3 pitcher together with one of your bench OF for a true ace. You're bench OFers should be used everyday and it sucks for you that both have to sit on your bench.
You thinking like say Shields + Victorino or Either for an elite arm? Problem is that I've searched through the other teams in the league and the ones with guys that I'd consider true stud pitchers don't need any OFers. The guy with Lincecum could probably use one, but there's no way he'd seriously consider that offer, right?
Here's a quick list of the good arms that the teams needing OF help have:
Hamels Lee Garza
Johnson Zambrano
Weaver Lilly Jurjjens Burnett
Washburn Kershaw Lincecum Jackson Danks
...the only team that has guys that really appeal to me is the last one. But he's a TB fan and has Crawford and Burrell (along with Werth) in his OF so his bias might have him thinking he's fine there. Lincecum may be impossible to get, but is Kershaw worth a shot at going after? I haven't really followed him much (not a keeper league btw).
Ok so a buddy of mine may or may not need some OF help. He's got the Jones, Choo, and Soriano as his starting OF, with Byrd as a reserve and Beltran on the DL. He probably doesn't NEED an OF, but he's voiced his disgust about Soriano to me on multiple occasions now so I think this might work. Plus, he just lost Soto to the DL for a while too. The offer:
His:
Halladay Byrd (basically just a throw in who I'll drop immediately)
for my:
Wieters Victorino Shields
Think that's got a reasonable shot of being accepted? He actually traded for Halladay not too long ago and has had awful luck with him so far...a DL stint, a ND, and 2 losses. Plus he didn't give up a lot for him in the first place (Zimmerman and Francisco), so I'm hoping he's viewing Halladay as expendable. And he's a Rays fan, so he's probably high on Shields.
Also, I've got a feeling he'll counter with my Doumit instead of Wieters, as he told me he was watching Doumit on the WW all season before I snatched him up a couple weeks ago. Would you still do the deal? Throw in a lesser pitcher instead(I'm thinking Scherzer)?
