Mauer agrees to do Home Run Derby? WTF

Postby Maris09 » Fri Jul 10, 2009 5:25 pm

That kinda sounds like the worst idea ever. :-S

He's not a HR hitter, he's had serious back issues (ie not conducive to swinging as hard as you can for 5 minutes, sitting down, and repeating).

He'd probably be best served taking the whole Allstar break off, but to do the HR derby and play in the game the next day seems like a ridiculous thing for him to do.
I can't beleive the Twins are ok with this.

Joe Mauer, who is having a career year, has agreed to participate in the Home Run Derby.

Too bad it isn't a line drive derby; Mauer would win for sure. He's at a cool .389/.461/.651 this season.

Pretty much the worst idea I've ever heard all season long. Batting Kemp 8th pales in comparison to this managerial decision. If he plays in the Derby and is straining his back trying to launch home runs for several rounds, Mauer will collapse in the second half, guaranteed.

if MLB asked Mauer to be in the HR derby they must be desperate.
anyone owning Joe Mauer in fantasy baseball should be selling right now, but i would have advised that anyway because i think he is due for a lesser 2nd half.

i dont just mean the AVG but the power that he has supposedly discovered. after May alot of people were going crazy OMG Mauer has power and hes going to be into the 30's for HR this season. he had 11 in May, then down to 3 in June and 1 so far into July. hes at 15 right now, but dont be surprised if he still finishes with less than 20. its not a stretch seeing that he only had 4 HR in the 2nd half last season.
it could hurt him even worse being in the HR competition where he has to alter his swing to try and hit HR.

What does the fact that Brandon Inge and Nelson Cruz are the other two announced AL participants tell you ;-D

to me personally it tells me i better trade both Inge and Cruz for the value they currently have before they fall off in the 2nd half.
but atleast Inge and Cruz are actually HR hitters and have shown so in the past.
