Why wouldn't they try to trade him and only eat part of his contract?

Maybe they did?

I'd like for the Cards to sign him and see if Dave Duncan could work his magic.

I think they might of shopped him, but we never heard about it.
And they had to do this quick, because of the activation of Scott Downs.

at this point no team was going to even give up a fringe prospect for him. hes owed too much money and he sucks.
Ricciardi made a HUGE mistake by not trading Ryan during the offseason when he still had some value. Ricciardi said during the offseason he had no interest in trading Ryan, which was a stupid move! there were teams that were looking for closers that would have traded something. he could have got a player in return AND saved money.
another bone head move by Ricciardi. sure hes not the worst GM in baseball, but i hardly think he is anywhere near the top.

I'm not surprised, and I also think this is the right course of action (BJ Ryan looks done as a pitcher). My guess is that they asked him to go down to AAA to try to fix himself, and he declined. No point in keeping a guy who can't get major league hitters out anymore on our roster for 1.5 years.

How do you know he what he could have gotten for BJ Ryan in the offseason? In fact, how do you know he didn't try to trade him (I don't remember this quote about having no interest in doing it)?

What on earth is it going to take to fire JP already?!?

I don't think I've ever seen this guy post about anything else outside of firing JP Ricciardi. We get it dude.

He was actually good last year coming off the TJ surgery. That's what makes this collapse so odd. He's not even striking batters out anymore.

Most Jays fans hate the guy (usually the ones that haven't taken the time to objectively evaluate what he's done). That's a lot of people.
