A: How old of games are you talking about? IIRC Vista needs an emulator to run DOS games.
B: Either buy the full version of Office or get a free open source Office suite like OpenOffice.org

Quake 3 (1999?), and I downloaded a free version of Leisure Suit Larry 2 that it won't let me play
Quake 3 should run ok in Vista, it might be a resolution setting. Make sure you have updated graphic drivers. And then try setting the game resolution to the same as your Vista setting.
