Is it worth overpaying for Reyes for 2010+ ?

Postby dannahann » Tue Jul 07, 2009 7:59 pm

I inherited a last place squad in a keeper and am attempting to rebuild it. There is a tight 3 way race for first and one of those owners has Reyes on DL and is fortunate enough to have Jeter at SS. IMO he has two gaping holes in his offense (he's starting Swisher and Kaz at 1st & 2nd). He could also use another good SP.

I'm contemplating sending him Dunn (1B elig) Brandon Phillips and Josh Johnson for Reyes. I think my offer will win him the title this season but MY concern is how strong a keeper does Reyes make into 2010? FWIW he again suffered a setback and will not be starting his rehab as planned.

We keep 3 players. With Reyes, I'd also keep Utley and one of Granderson or Quentin. Where does Reyes rank as a keeper into 2010, still top 5?? top 10?? lower???

You're a last place team...you won't win this year so what position does that leave u in? Well...it means you're keeping either Dunn, Philips or Johnson rather than Reyes if you don't make this trade. This is definitely something that will boost your team for next season. He will be back to his regular self barring injury next year...I would consider him a write-off for this year but that is not a concern for you at this point. You should continue to think ahead and not worry about assets that you won't be using as of 2010.
This trade benefits you....do it.

Yup if you're far out of it why not. Reyes,Utley,Granderson would be solid keepers for next year. Id much rather Reyes as a keeper than any of the players youre trading away

You're way overpaying and I don't think it's worth it. Phillips should be enough to land Reyes straight up at this point. With that package, you should be able to target a legit stud who's healthy, ala Braun/Mcab.

I think you're overpaying. If this first place competitor really wants to win, they'll deal Reyes for less. Perhaps Dunn and Phillips for Reyes? Then try and move Johnson and Granderson for Sizemore or BJ Upton or someone? I'd like to see you play your odds better than throw it all away in one go. Try and consider Utley as your cornerstone, and work for Reyes and an OF1 (better than Granderson) as your 3 keepers.
