What about the White Sox as a potential buyer? They did try to trade for Peavy earlier in the season, about a month ago... They're definitely in the hunt, 2 games back as of tonight.

I don't think they have the kind of elite young talent that the Jays would be looking for.

what about Gordon Beckham? Don't the Jays have a pretty glaring hole at SS in their system?

He's needed if they want to contend with the current form of this team (Rolen, Overbay, Scutaro). A Halladay trade would mean they are giving up on the plan that they've been talking about for a year. It would also seem to indicate that the Jays want to drop their payroll.
with Marcum returning next season and a strong Halladay to ace the rotation they could have a chance at contending, but even then you need the other 3 teams (NY/BOS/TB) to have things go wrong.
They have the 5th best team in baseball (check the run differentials) even without Marcum right now. They are not far off at all. A couple additions offensively, and they would be right there.

He's a good prospect (though he's not a top 10 guy), but who else do they have to give?

if not Davis, insult other high end 3B prospect plus someone for SS.
with Marcum, Romero, Cecil, Purcey, Mills, Litsch, ect ..they have enough quality pitching.. but they are going to need more offence, at 3B/SS in particular.
That team isn't anywhere near strong enough to contend in the AL East. Without any top pitching, that is a team that will struggle.
