Brian Roberts trade advice

Postby pbmonkeybowl » Mon Jul 06, 2009 7:56 pm

I have Roberts and offered him as trade bait for a SP.
5X5 roto league (keeper, auction.)

So far, verbal offers include Hamels, Vazquez, and Gallardo.

Gallardo is a potential keeper at $15 next year, so that's tempting. But I still lean toward Hamels even though the other two have better numbers so far. I worry that both will see their era and whip rise in the second half.

Thoughts?

Who do you have to fill-in for Roberts? You can't just move your starting 2B for SP and expect for some magic to fall off the WW. Roberts may not be putting up stunning numbers this season, but I'd by far rather have an elite 2B as a keeper than even a stud SP. I don't know too much about auction values, though.

Jose Lopez will be my 2B once the trade goes through. I have a serious need for SP and the only real surplus would be speed, hence pretty much the only elite player I could part with right now is Roberts. Of course Lopez is a major step down, I know that. But if I don't make a move for an ace pitcher my season is over. So that's my situation.

Keepers cost $5 more next year than what we paid this year. Roberts isn't a keeper for me. Hamels and Vazquez are also not keeper options given what their owners paid for them this year. Gallardo is possibly a keeper if he keeps up this pace. (his owner paid $10, so he'd be $15 next year, which is what the guy paid for Vazquez this year.)

If you have a surplus of speed, Lopez as a back-up, and auction values prevent Roberts from being a realistic keeper, I don't see TOO big of a problem dealing him for SP then.

Make sure to grab Gallardo for his keeper value.

Simply put.....I would make the swap!

I would much rather have BRoberts over Lopez at 2B but if you need the SP and can grab a great keeper and good "this year" guy like Gallardo (don't worry.....his numbers should continue to be great) then I would jump all over it.

Also, it's not like Lopez is a piece of crap on the bottom of a pair of 20 year old nickers!!! He has and still can produce decently (only if he stays healthy)!!

Good luck!!!

Yes, take the deal for Gallardo by all means. Gallardo is very good, and the dropoff to Lopez from Roberts is not so severe to keep you from doing it for such a good value on Gallardo.

Thanks all.

New offer came in, Kershaw for Roberts. Kershaw was $9 this year so he'd be $14 next year.

But I'm still deciding between Gallardo and Hamels at this point.

For me, it'd be Gallardo without question. Good luck.
