Scott Hairston traded to A's

Postby AussieDodger » Sun Jul 05, 2009 11:17 pm

8:28pm: According to Corey Brock of MLB.com, the Padres have traded Scott Hairston to the A's for two minor league pitchers and a PTBNL.

8:55pm: Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com says the new Padres pitchers are RHP Ryan Webb and high-A RHP Craig Italiano.

What an interesting move.

You'd think that SD would want to hold onto every little bit of power that they have, so maybe this is partially a payroll move, as Hairston will be eligible for arbitration for the 2nd time at the end of the season.
The pitchers that SD receive are pretty interesting, Italiano, 22, has the kind of ground-ball/K profile that could have potential, and Ryan Webb, 23, is a control pitcher who's K rate has returned to a reasonable level this year after being moved to the 'pen.

Oakland desperately needed more right-handed power, and seeing as Hairston used to play 2B, is this our new 3B? Or is Ryan Sweeney's time up?

Fantasy-wise it might be best to see Hairston's role before you scoop him up, and also whether he needs an adjustment period to AL pitching, as some players do.

Am I the only one, or does this deal make absolutely no sense to anyone else?

Aren't Petco and the Mausoleum similar is regards to stifling hitting? It's not like worse parks exist. :-?

Makes sense for the A's as they get a solid OF who won't hit FA until 2011 for two non-prospects (assuming PTBNL is a nobody)
I guess it makes some sense for the Padres as they need to dump some salary and Hairston is arbitration eligible this offseason. I still feel like they could have gotten more for him.

A streaky platoon player with mediocre defense, the padres were probably looking to get any warm body for him at this point.

From the Padres perspective they know that they aren't going to be good before hairston hits FA 9and he's not that great) and they grab two middling but not dead prospects while saving some money. At least that is how I see it.
