There were 4 players that hit the ball over the centerfield wall at the Polo Grounds. Name the first player to do so. And for absolutely no extra credit at all, see if you can name the other three. Remember, I am only looking for the first player to do it, you throw in the other three for free! :-D

Says in the baseball almanac he's first...

bottom of the page.
On April 29, 1953, Joe Adcock became the first player to hit a home run over the centerfield wall at the Polo Grounds!

I may be completely wrong here, but I was reading up on a few Negro leaguers who later joined the majors a while back, and seem to recall Luke Easter doing this first. Not sure, though...

Accepted as answer by metsfan1969 on Fri Mar 07, 2003 10:58 am EST.

Actually, this link from the baseball almanac says he's second. Read the liner notes at the bottom of the page.

http://baseball-almanac.com/stadium/st_polo.shtml

If you go here, you can read about the incredible Luke Easter. Pay attention to the fifth paragraph down.

Remember, I said first player, not first major league player....

Nice call Arlo!

Nice Job! ;-D

Regardless of some of it's obvious shortcomings, I find the baseball almanac to be an interesting and valuable source of knowledge for dispute resolution or just sheer baseball knowledge. :-b
