Some good comments throughout this thread. I've played guitar for about 15 or so years and have just a couple things to keep in mind. First, don't spend a lot of money on this guitar. Majority of people who purchase a guitar never keep up with it, so it's money out the window. Not saying you'll quit, but there's a possibility and then you have an expensive guitar laying around collecting dust and that's just a crime right there. Secondly, kind of what phillyphan referenced to, don't be too proud to take some lessons. At least initially. I didn't and wish I had because I developed some bad habits that are really hard to break. Lastly, as acs alluded to, you are going to get discouraged. It is going to suck, you are going to suck, it's going to sound absolutely horrible and will make no sense at all for the first couple months. But eventually it does come together and it's an awesome instrument and a lot of fun to play. Also, don't rush it. Play a lot of guitars in the store, ignore price for now, just to get a feel for different ones. Then you can make a more educated decision.

Would like to learn how to play it, but have no clue how. It's shoved in the back of a wardrobe - electric + amp.
When I did try to play I came up with mangled "Money" by Pink Floyd.
Sounds like she wanted you to learn how to play some songs for her. Go to a music store, tell them straight up, you've never played, never attempted to play, but want the best beginner book they have, simplest one on the rack, and go with that one. If you stick with it, you won't regret it.
Wait, you tried playing 'Money' or it sounded like a horrible version of the awesome song?
