Start the countdown for Smaok...

Postby MaudDib » Sat Jul 04, 2009 9:13 pm

2008 first-round pick Justin Smoak earned a promotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The 22-year-old tore up Double-A Frisco, batting .328 with six homers and 29 RBI in 50 games. He was getting on base at a .449 clip.

I figure at this rate he is a call-up in Sept. but what do you think the chances are that he is in the majors before that?

i hope he is called up before september but i'm sure the rangers would like to see him continue hitting as well as he is at AAA. he is supposed to be the next mark teixeira, and in that ballpark, he has the chance to be a stud in the middle of that lineup for years to come. been holding my #4 waiver in my dynasty league all year hoping that he can continue to fly under the radar so that i will get him with at 4, which shouldn't be too tough since the top guys are praying for heyward, bumgarner, etc.

I don't think early-mid august is unrealistic with how badly davis has struggled. God I was so wrong on him >< But back to Smoak, he has had a couple flaws in AA. Hasn't hit lefties all that well (hes a switch hitter) and he hasn't really slugged quite as much as you would like (.481, propped up by batting average) but obviously anyone with a .449 obp is doing well.

Very excited to see him.

If Davis continues his record K pace, I'm expecting him by end of the first week of August. I think they give him at least 1 full month at AAA. Keep in mind that TEX is tied for 1st in their division, so when that race starts to wind down, they're gonna be replacing Davis with for the good of the team.

I think the Davis thing reminds me of Frenchy last year who was sent down right around the same time, with the idea of getting him a week in the minors to build something then bring him right back up after the ASB. Personally I hope they keep Smoak down long enough to keep rookie eligibility this offseason, he won't start over Tex for me obviously, and the extra seasoning will do him good.
