13 Weeks into a Keeper League (Season 1)

And I still haven't gotten the rules tweaked properly yet.

Background:

This is a 12 team, Yahoo Plus 6x6 Head-to-Head League.

I put out some tentative keeper rules a while back, but I'm having difficulty with them and with figuring things out. Here are the basics:

1: Each team can keep 8 to 9 Players.
2: Any player kept will cost the owner the draft pick they were taken with in the prior season's draft. (Pujols will cost your first rnd pick, etc etc).
3: Free Agents will be assigned a draft pick status based on their final overall ranking.
4: A player must sacrifice one keeper if they want to keep two players from the same round.

Here is what I want to accomplish with this keeper league:

I: Cause people to give something up to keep good players.
II: Reward owners for keeping late draft picks/free agent finds.
III: Is fair towards everyone in the league
IV: Enable bad teams to make moves in season and in the offseason that can help set them up for next year.

Does anyone have any similarly formatted leagues where they can share some advice please?

I think that my first suggestion would be to set rules before the season starts, and not change them midseason. Tentative rules are bad rules.

Also, you have several rules listed that are not specific. How will a FA's keeper value be based exactly? One thing that I believe is that in this type of format, a guy that is not drafted should not have a costlier keeper value than a guy that was drafted. Make FA's cost the owner his lowest remaining pick in the draft.

But the biggest bit of advice, is to write very specific rules, and write them before your draft. If rules changes must be made, they should be made before the draft in the year that they are to take effect.
