Trading Hamilton and Howard: insane??? WHIR

Postby hambone1818 » Tue Jun 23, 2009 9:25 pm

I have a diesel team that has run in to a TON of bad luck. Between injuries to half my team, a ton of underperforming players and an odd h-2-h schedule where I've run in to teams when they have great weeks, I'm in 8th place in a 10 team league. When you see my team you'll be shocked...anyway, below is the offer, the league settings and my current squad:

MY J. Hamilton and R. Howard
for
HIS L. Berkman, F. Hernandez and J. Broxton

10 team, h-2-h, 5x5, weekly lineup changes, 7 keepers

C Wieters
1B Howard
2B Pedroia
3B Reynolds
SS Rollins
CI Helton
MI DeRosa
OF J. Upton
OF Sizemore
OF Choo
OF Scott
UTIL Ortiz
BEN Manny
DL Hamilton
DL Aramis

SP Lincecum
SP Hamels
RP Soria
RP Capps
P J. Johnson
P Lester
P Wainwright
BEN Danks
BEN E. Santana

A few thoughts: 1) my offense is diesel, getting Sizemore, Manny, Aramis and Hamilton back in one week is almost unfair. Trading two guys away to make my pitching equally ridiculous would be fantastic. 2) From a keeper perspective I hate losing two top-20 keepers, but I love my options even without them: Wieters, Pedroia, Reynolds, Aramis, Manny, Rollins, Upton, Sizemore, Lincecum, Hamels, JJ, Felix, Lester. 3) I've told the other owner we'd have to wait a week to make this happen (that's when all those guys are coming off the DL). In that time I'll work to move Wainwright and one of the offensive players to get an upgrade offensively.

The more I look at this deal, the more I love it. I know it's just ridiculous, but I think getting THAT level of pitching (I mean, my staff will be Lincecum, Hamels, Josh Johnson, Lester, Felix Hernandez, Wainwright, Danks, Ervin, Soria and Broxton...that's INSANE!) on top of my already great offense would be amazing.

Thoughts? Again, WHIR, just leave a link. Thanks!

maybe put in A-Ram instead of Howard. howard is a notorious 2nd half performer. then take out broxton out of the deal

That kinda makes sense, but two issues with that: 1) this guy is looking for keepers. Aramis is far from done, but he's 31 and not nearly as attractive a keeper option as Howard. Plus the positions wouldn't match up.

Also, the whole point of me making a deal is to get something better than Capps in the second RP spot. My closers have been AWFUL all year, I'd love to get a second stud to go with Soria.

Any other thoughts?

That's funny, that's actually a trade we had originally discussed. He wasn't fully sold on that deal so I kinda threw something else out there--I let him know it wasn't an offer, just something else to discuss. The more I looked at it the more I liked it.

Alright, how about this: rate these three deals (the third is one I've discussed with another owner...I'd have to grab a MI to replace DeRosa but it is an option):

1) Hamilton and Howard FOR Felix, Broxton and Berkman
2) Hamilton and Wainwright FOR Felix and Broxton
3) DeRosa and Capps (who I'd drop anyway) FOR Frank Francisco

I think that deal 1 isn't bad considering Hamilton's woes with injury. The tougher loss is Howard, but he killed me in H2H last year and I recently dealt him along with Porcello for Evan Longoria. So I can't blame you -- Felix is awesome and a keeper. Broxton, IMO, is arguably a top 2 or 3 closer, and Berkman -- while not a sexy player type -- is productive in the second half as are the Stros.

I dont have a trade suggestion for you but my advice in the grand scheme of things would be to hold onto Howard at all costs. Can you possibly sell him on Reynolds? Hes bound to cool off.
