A-Rod keeper trade

Postby pokerplaya » Mon Jun 22, 2009 3:32 pm

12 team H2H league, I'm in 2nd place 1.5 games out of first. Top 4 make the playoffs.

Keeper rule - can keep 2 players, in the round you drafted them last year.

I currently have C. Davis at 3B and need to replace him ASAP. There is really no one available on waivers, Pedro Feliz or Peralta would be my best options. :-/

One of my current keepers is definitely Pujols. If I finish in 1st or 2nd that would make him an 11th or 12th overall pick which is a steal.

The trade: Matt Weiters (10th round keeper) and Chad Billingsley (6th round keeper) for ARod (would be 2nd round keeper for me if I decided to keep him).

Weiters was likely going to be one of my two keepers, although I do have other options (Hanson or Strasburg - I have the #1 waiver) would be viable keepers in the 22nd and final round.

I'm worried about ARod's struggles, and the announcements that keep coming that he needs more and more time off for rest. It makes me think that the DL could always be a possibility or he may just not produce until the hip is fully healed. However, Davis is a black hole and you really don't get much better than a guy like ARod as an upgrade.

I would still have Lincecum, Gallardo, Liriano, Scherzer, Hanson, Nolasco and Smoltz to anchor my staff when he returns. In a 12 team league, that seems sufficiently deep to be able to trade a stud pitcher like Billingsley.

Take it. Wieters WON'T be the next Mauer and A-Rod has 10 more years in him. Do it.

First of all, it's very close for me too. And I hear you about A - Rod and his 'fatigue' issues and possible DL stint. However, it's still a long season, and I believe A - Rod will be back sooner than later and playing the way we're used to.

Also, I believe you can afford the loss of Billingsley ... your staff is impressive regardless, and I think it's worth the risk. Smoltz return also makes this a bit easier for me to decide.

Help me out man?

I agree. I would take it. Wieters is overrated in my book. Too much hype around him.

in a keeper league, Wieters and Billingsley for ARod? i think you could get more for ARod with his recent health issue and that hes not hitting that well either.
i would probually go for someone other than ARod, but i think im biased because i dont really like the Yankees or Rodriguez.
someone like Aubrey Huff would be my first choice. he should still have 3B eligibility yes? hes likely to get traded to a better team and he usually does better in the 2nd half, plus you could get him cheaper than Wieters/Billingsley.

if you did trade for ARod, he would become your 2nd keeper with Pujols, over Lincecum? maybe another reason to not trade for ARod and go for someome more in the middle for 3B and then keep Lincecum?

i think ARod's price is going to be more than he is worth and there are other lesser known 3B who will be more productive over the rest of the season.

No, I'm not keeping Lincecum. Probably wouldn't keep ARod unless he mashed for the 2nd half of the season. If I finish in 1st place, I'd be getting the last pick of the 1st round and the first of the 2nd. Since I drafted Lincecum in the 2nd round, I'd lose my 2nd round pick (if you see my first post again, it outlines the keeper rules better) so I'd be throwing away a pick in my mind. There is a decent chance I could not keep Lincecum and then draft him with my 2nd round pick anyway.

Obviously Pujols would be my first keeper since he essentially would be kept with one of the last picks in the first round which make him a steal. After him, my top keeper choices stand to be Wieters (10th round), Gallardo (11th round) or Tommy Hanson (final round) based on value of their draft position. Obviously I have better players, but it's all about value when you have keeper rules like these.

Funny you mentioned that...I already went after him first, but his owner would not move him for any other than a package centered around Ian Kinsler (meaning it wouldn't have been straight up) and I'm also not a fan of plugging a hole at 3B by making one at 2B. With the deal I've formulated now, I have the pitching depth to cover Billingsley's loss and I'm not overly concerned with the catcher position in general. I'll just ride the hot hand on the FA list.

Other thoughts?

A-Rod's head isn't in the game right now. He's been publicly humiliated by the Madonna scandal and the steroid scandal and his marriage has fallen apart, on top of that I don't think his hip is 100% either. Whether or not A-Rod juiced is irrelevant because he doesn't need them anyway, he is arguably the best baseball player in the history of the sport and he will be back with a vengeance next season (I really don't expect much this year though). Try and offer him a different pitcher than Bills and see if it flies (some people really believe A-Rod is done and he may dump him for less - these people are fools though). If you have to do the deal as is, so be it.
